In fact the main reason I am a republican, a conservative and a patriot is because of this. I found out this is not uncommon.
There are abusive hateful families, and the state mental health system can be abusive as well. Aspergers is generally not a disorder that warrants any kind of government action, but there is a higher incidence of co-morbid mental illness.
It is possible to misdiagnose Aspergers - my younger son hated school - the school asked for an evaluation - the psychiatrist diagnosed Aspergers - I said, no, his older brother has Aspergers and that is why you are diagnosing it, but I know Aspergers and he does not have it, and no, I am not giving him any medications either.
And there is also real Aspergers, whatever you call it.
And there are people with Aspergers who do very well, work and marry and have children. There are some who don’t do so well. My son is struggling right now, but I have strong hopes for him. He has come a long way.
Some people with Aspergers are helped by medication. Some are not. Psychiatric medication is difficult, with widely varying individual responses, and the anti-psychotics in particular have a host of bad side-effects which must be very carefully weighed against the benefits.
And there are times when the state fails individuals and families not by over-diagnosing mental impairment and taking away the rights of the individual, but by refusing to compel desperately sick people into treatment. The consequences of that can be homelessness, crime, jail, suicide or the murder of those who love them best and advocate for them.
A woman I knew and her husband were murdered by their son because the state would not take action. Now he will spend the rest of his life in a secure psychiatric facility. There is no one left to love him, and he continues to exercise his one freedom - to refuse medication.
