Pima County bans texting while driving

Motorists in Pima County will have to wait to respond to that text message after a ban on texting while driving went into effect this week, giving law enforcement another tool to curb what one Sierra Vista police commander called the most prevalent of the many distractions within a vehicle these days.

For years, texting while driving has been one of the most common forms of driver distraction, said Cmdr. Lawrence Boutte of the Sierra Vista Police Department.

“We’ve not done any official studies, but every last one of us knows that it takes attention from the road and is definitely a factor in the accidents that happen, not just texting but cell phones in general, and other distractions inside the car,” Boutte said.

I this a New Traffic Offense? TWD. Texting While Driving. Coming next might be, rather should be, CWD. Celling While Driving.

The distraction level for texting is much higher than when just talking on your cell phone because it requires looking down at the phone. Yesterday I had a vehicle in oncoming traffic swerve right into my lane . They were driving one of those little liberal style compacts. I know they had to textin. If I wouldn’t have swerved out of their way they would have sideswiped me.

That doesn’t give a pass to CWD. More than one study has proven that CWD is just as bad as DUI and it is only egotistical and WRONG fools who say “oh, that doesn’t apply to ME.” If you are a member of the human race it definitely applies.

Don’t use the damn phone while driving — period (yes, it is OK to listen to GPS instructions — different part of the brain).

Good. Nearly every time I leave the house, I see an accident in a major intersection. Anything that might force these drivers to pay attention is a good thing.

Well, that's all right then! I'm glad government is dedicating science and logic to laws they pass willy-willy.

But every last one of us knows that it takes attention from the road

As do a million other things. I find the most dangerous, inattentive drivers are women in minivans with kids raising hell in the back seat and older people, many of whom should simply not be driving even with 100% of their attention on the road 100% of the time. Their vision is poor to failing (often due to cataracts) and they drive far too slowly thus impeding the flow of traffic and causing panic maneuvers by many around them.

distractions inside the car

You mean like police cruisers with radios, plate readers, and laptops? How about handheld phones as they drive 90 mph on the highway in a non-emergency situation?

It’s not that new. Municipalities have been cracking down on distracted driving for a while now. And they should, controlling a 1 ton vehicle at 50 MPH while looking at your lap is not a good hobby.

I receive instructions or assistance in the field on my investigations. I never know when a call is coming in and most of the time I am driving. I don't use my cell phone for casual talk while driving. It's a necessity for me and pulling over is not always an option in heavy traffic.

I’m not against this law per se. What I am against is a hodge podge of laws throughout the state that are different so when going from one town to the next there’s an entirely different set of laws no one is privy to.

Make the law for the entire state and stop this county and town ordinance stufff.

“Make the law for the entire state and stop this county and town ordinance stuff.”

Just across the AZ state line here in New Mexico, the no texting while driving law is state wide. There is one exception to the law though, if you’re a licensed amateur radio operator you’re exempt. Go figure.

And that changes your biology? Your “argument” is the same as someone who says “I am a professional beer tester and I have to drink and then drive to the next bar.” Manifest necessity is not a defense.

If you get in an accident your company is now in the hot seat as well as you for creating a danger to the public. And there are more and more cases where that is working.

And yet somehow your field managed to exist before cellphones, and frankly your job is NOT a valid excuse to risk the lives of everybody else.

But the demands and expectations of my job have risen during that time. Until you do the work and have an understanding of what is required I can't take your comment seriously. We now live in different times.

None of which excuses the FACT that every single time you take one of those calls while driving you risk the lives of EVERYBODY around you. You’re excuse mongering just like drunk drivers used to, and you’re just as full of crap.

I live in the real world. The real world where distracted driving has the exact same impact on your skills as drunk driving, and your phone has voicemail which you can check later.
