Make an outrageous proposal first, then after the hide of the opponent has been sufficiently chapped, soften the proposal as a counteroffer to what they have to offer.

So far, the other side is not offering much of anything they are willing to give up. But they are over there being so angried up and outraged they are likely to concede and not even challenge a lot of other seemingly much less important items on the agenda, only to turn around and find themselves checkmated and painted into a corner.

The Donald plays the chess game in three dimensions, and they are still playing tiddlywinks. And missing the cup every time.

Well in this case, I am not sure Donald even wants any form of this. He might go for making it more respectable to salute and honor the flag, but banning the burning by miserable people (as long as they do it to their own flag, not somebody else’s)... I don’t think that’s the end goal.

I wouldn’t even make the pledge mandatory in schools... I would have the National Anthem, and perhaps the State anthem, play while the flags are raised before the class and the class listens respectfully. All America is insisting on is respect. Adulation is earned. That’s something the Castro regime would enforce. We don’t.
