Of all the perks of the presidency that Barack Obama will miss as he leaves the White House, it’s a good bet that Camp David won’t rank high on the list.
Compared with his predecessors, President Obama has spent little downtime over the past eight years at the secluded presidential retreat in the mountains overlooking Thurmont, Maryland. In total, Mr. Obama has visited Camp David 39 times, spanning all or parts of 93 days — barely 3 percent of his two-term tenure.
By contrast, President George W. Bush made 149 visits to Camp David in two terms, covering all or parts of 487 days, said Mark Knoller, the CBS News White House reporter who keeps meticulous records of presidential comings and goings.
Mr. Obama’s visits to the retreat have been less frequent during his second term. Tentative plans to host congressional leaders at Camp David in the “fourth quarter” of his presidency never materialized as Mr. Obama’s relationship with Republican lawmakers continued to erode.
The last time Mr. Obama visited Camp David was in July, when he spent a pre-birthday weekend with friends. First lady Michelle Obama hosted a “girls’ weekend” for some of her friends in October at the retreat, which costs about $10 million per year to maintain and staff.
As in so many other ways, things may be about to change....

Although I’ve never been to Camp David, I’ve been to nearby Ft. Detrick, MD, which is outside of Frederick, MD, and up to Thurmont and the surrounding area. It is quite nice and secluded in the Catoctin Mountains. The president can fly directly there by helicopter from the White House, thus minimal travel costs esp flying to Hyannisport or Hawaii.
Also, one of the several Cold War alternate government sites is in the same mountain range.
Plus the Union Army marched up what is now US 15 from Frederick to Gettysburg in late June, 1863; something about having a date with Bobbie Lee somebody....
There’s a complete underground facility at Camp David for use in time of “emergency”, that’s where the funds are used.
I believe that Trump will not only love Camp David but will appreciate its history and the dignity that real Americans feel there.
Obama will have plenty of free time to hang out with other former administration members.
He can rabbit hunt with Carter, go “Whitewater” rafting with the Clintons and shoot quail with Dick Cheney.

It’s secluded. You can secure it much easier than Martha’s Vineyard for example.
There is no need to set up comms because they are “built in.” You don’t have to do all the prep that goes into scouting locations, and looking up local lunatics.
At Camp DAVID you add a few more guards and you are pretty much all set.

All the Trump sons would enjoy. I can see young Barron inviting friends for a week or two in the summer for a really cool summer camp. Adding a couple of camp counselors and a director is all they would need. Am sure more than one staff might even volunteer for the duty.
I have a marine buddy who was stationed there during Reagan’s term. Lots of crazy stories where the public forest was cleared of hippies before Mr. Reagan would go horse back riding.
