You forgot to mention that it was formed pretty much by Emile or On Education, not to mention the French Revolution and the Enlightenment. If Timothy Dwight’s 1799 sermon is to be believed, Voltaire and his ilk’s entire activities was specifically for ideological brainwashing of the youth and whoever else they convert.
And yes, we really should bring it back. Even the Founding Fathers exiled Citizen Genet when he tried to stir up France’s crap here in America, so it obviously couldn’t have been against the first amendment. And right now because of how freedom of speech got so expanded that we are practically paralyzed with fear of trying to stop mobs of malcontent people, it just comes across as being like France where no one dared try to condemn Voltaire and his ilk from their seditious speech, not even the king, and that resulted in France, which was originally known as the Older Sister of the Church, to become ruined, and be a shadow of its former self.
