Comanches last war chief, Quanah Parker
Its not every day you can lean on the dining room table that once belonged to the Comanches last war chief, Quanah Parker, and wonder if your feet are going to crash through the floorboards.
The table that once hosted Teddy Roosevelt and Geronimo is now surrounded by a house thats collapsing due to lack of funds and lack of will power.
I wonder what happened to Geronimo’s Cadillac?
Empire of the Summer Moon - excellent book, highly recommended!
Quanah Parker is one of the giants of Indian culture. This house is central to his story. He is a neglected figure who is largely responsible for moving the culture past the ill-starred Ghost Dances of Wevoka. Those led to the death of Sitting Bull and the disaster at Wounded Knee.
On reservations across the land, poverty stricken Indians were at the end of the road with only despair facing them. Parker, with help of a few others, transformed the Ghost Dance ethos into the Native American Church. While some may today see the Church as a cult or heresy, to most Indians it is seen as pretty mainline Christianity. Certainly, it celebrates and believes in the main tenets and doctrines of the Faith. Certainly, it celebrates the divinity and saving grace of Jesus Christ.
Saving this home, through private donations would be a very good deal.
A shame. Stabilizing it will cost 200,000. Restoring over a million. Same story for the USS Olympia in Philadelphia. Fired the opening shots of the Spanish American war. “You may fire when ready Gridley”. It brought home the unknown soldier of WWI.
She hasn’t had a dry dock in 50 years and needs a 20 million restoration.
They are talking about towing her out and sinking it as a reef.
We GIVE 12 billion a year to Afghanistan. Several billion more to Egypt, the Libyans, the Pakistanis, etc. Just shovel money at them while our national treasures are left to rot for a pittance of what we give away to ingrates.
Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches is a fascinating book about the Comanche and Parkers.
I wouldn’t mind the government even doing it. If we have 150 billion in small bills and gold to give to Iran, we got cash for things like this.
One handful of what the government gave to Iran. One literal handful of what we gave last year to Iraq, to Syria, to FREAKIN Al Qeida, to Egypt...
It pisses me off that we give money to THAT, but can’t find a penny for anything that celebrates our History.
It’s a shame that we’ve lost so much of our history to neglect and apathy. This could be a good education center if it was restored.
Read it a few years ago so completely agree. Extremely well written history. And coincidentally, while “Stagecoach” might be the ultimate classic, “The Searchers” has always garnered my vote as the best film of John Wayne’s career and maybe the greatest Western of all time.
And one of the most beautiful films as well.
Some things should never be seen, and once seen can never be forgotten.
