And theres no way, obviously, to farm the amount of acres that we would need to feed New York City unless we go vertical. If that were true, going vertical would have had to occur a long time ago.
Still, it boggles the mind to think of how much food must be brought into NYC everyday, (and how much waste must be removed.)

Japan is already doing this. Huge warehouse-sized indoor growing facilities. There is even a small outfit in my small town growing specialty foods and herbs year ‘round indoors.

The high calorie foods like corn, rice and potatoes you need to actually meet the needs of the population if transportation is shut down aren’t what grow best in those greenhouses.
