That is a purely under-rated number. So many people got CCW (therefore not requiring a background check for each individual purchase) that the true number of purchases is well concealed.

True, but there are only about 15 million CCW permits out there, and only 25 states allow a CCW to be an alternative to a NICS check.
In addition, each CCW requires a NICS check, and NICS checks are also done for other purposes. Used guns that are already in the private stock often have a NICS check for them.
For example, Tennesse does a NICS check for each CCW *every month*!!
We know how many gun are added to the private stock from the BATFE figures reported for new guns manufactured and imported each year.
From those figures, the average is about .6 new guns for each NICS check.
