I don’t know what the percentage might be, but a lot of those background checks are for used guns changing hands and do not reflect new guns adding to the total number of guns.

That is a purely under-rated number. So many people got CCW (therefore not requiring a background check for each individual purchase) that the true number of purchases is well concealed.
