Match: Half of Millennials View Sex As a Way To Test For a 'Connection'
MRC TV ^ | February 9, 2017 | Brittany M. Hughes

Match.com just released their annual “Singles in America” survey, offering a chilling insight into the Millennial Generation -- those born between the early '80s and 2000 -- and what this demographic thinks about love, sex and relationships.

It’s no secret that Millennials have a much looser – pun intended – view of sex and commitment than prior generations, following a change in social norms that now seem to place higher value on things like “strong, independent women” than on committed long-term relationships or the notion of waiting until marriage to become intimate. But Match’s study of 5,500 random Millennials pulls back the curtain on just how far we’ve traveled down that dead-end road.

For example, Match found that Millennial singles are 48 percent more likely to sleep with a partner right off the bat to see if there’s a “connection” than members of any other generation.

Nearly two out of three millennials say the best place to meet someone is at a bar (church, school and the local soup kitchen didn't crack the top three).

The study also found the Millennial Generation is 48 percent more likely than any other generation to admit they’d had sex with someone before the first date. A full 28 percent – nearly one in three – said they see sex as a way to find out if they actually love someone.

But here are a few data points Match didn’t include in their study. The rate of sexual transmitted diseases has risen to an all-time high. Reported cases of syphilis – which can cause conditions including miscarriage, stillbirth, blindness or stroke – rose by 19 percent between 2014 and 2015, while gonorrhea cases rose by 12.8 percent, and Chlamydia cases are up 5.9 percent.

Also in 2015, another 17,670 African Americans were diagnosed with HIV in the United States, with the vast majority of new cases being young women and gay or bisexual men.

And while divorce rates have dropped to a nearly 40-year low (marriages in the U.S. now have about a 50/50 chance of ending in divorce), TIME noted that the drop is likely due to the fact that younger couples are much more likely to simply live together, making divorce unnecessary.

In a culture in which sex is cheap, marriage is outdated and abortions are available at the drop of a hat, it’s no wonder Match found that a full 57 percent of Millennials admitted they’re lonely.

Well, yes, I suppose it would be a ‘connection’ of sorts.

What a bunch of ignoramus’s.

100% wrong, 180 degrees backward. Sex before 2 people truly know each other is the kiss of death for a relationship. I speak from painful experience.

Sounds like a way to contract VD.

OK fine, I'm old and out of touch and no longer get the subtle nuances of modern parlance but, what was the pun?

It’s no secret that Millennials have a much looser – pun intended – view of sex...

Can anyone explain to me in a way I could understand what pun did the author intend here.

Talk about being completely backwards.

I’m pretty sure the author was referring to the actual physical connection also being looser, due to extensive use. :)

I don't know where sweet Brittany learned English composition but actually that is a wonder; in fact, back in my day that would have been considered counter-intuitive to the point of irony. If people could be made to ponder it, this should be a teachable moment where we might consider that the people who gave us the current morality actually sold us a destructive bill of goods rather than liberate us from Biblical oppression.

Not like it was back in the late 60s and early 70s where you knew every co-ed was keeping herself pure (snicker, snicker). The Student Health Service was passing out free birth control pills so the girls would have clear complexions. And one of the campus ministries would loan girls money to fly to New York for abortions (I think it was the Episcopalians; the Presbyterians had gotten thrown off campus for hiding guns for the SDS as I recall what I was told). I don’t know why they would need to do that, because the girls weren’t loose like they are now. /s

Money breaks ups more marriages than anything else.

If you want to see if a couple is compatible have them place all their money in a joint checking account. If a year passes without problems then they can get married.

Maybe he was juxtaposing looser with loser???

Looser seemed appropriate, rather than a pun.

Yet another data point proving Millennials are the worst generation in history, as if umpteen videos of their snowflake tantrums weren’t enough

"A full 28 percent – nearly one in three – said they see sex as a way to find out if they actually love someone have fallen for one of the oldest lines in the book.

Omg, this is not true that this is new. Does anyone remember that back in the late 1970s and 80s every character on shows had sex every week?? Before AIDS, the world was much more into random hookups than now.

Makes sense, don’t you try shoes on before you buy them? /sarc

OK all you who recommend waiting until marriage, what if you marry a freak who likes to hurt people during sex? Or you find after the marriage that you can’t stand each other sexually and you are doomed to life with crummy sex? As someone who has experienced a fabulous connection after many years with a cold lonely connection, I can tell you unequivocally that the fabulous connection is much preferable. In my mind, the whole fake deal about waiting until after you were stuck in a marriage had to do with keeping the young marrieds from knowing the difference.
