Australia Man Arrested, Faces 20 Years Sentence for Printing a Replica Gun

In the picture the 3D printed replicas are in the lower row. From the left, they are 1,3,4 and 5. The typical 3D printed striations are easily visible on #4.

Australia has, in many ways, some of the most extreme gun regulations in the world. By jumping through a great many hoops, and carefully filling out the right forms over several months, you can own and use a significant number of firearms. The regulations are a wish list of most of those proposed by gun hating activists from around the world. The were rushed through the Australian political machine with amazing speed. The trigger event was the Port Arthur massacre. The process was aided by a fully cheering Australian media and the Prime Minister, who openly hated guns.

I reviewed the regulations over time. Some are simply baffling. What is the point of including BB guns in the same class as shotguns?  Why are airgun pistols placed in the same category as .357 magnum revolvers? Many types of slingshots are illegal.  Why, after an applicant has filled out all the paperwork, and gotten all the permissions to own a gun, do they have to wait a minimum of 28 days to pick it up? If they purchase another gun, they have to wait another 28 days. This regulation is more bizzare yet. Replica guns that do not fire anything are treated the same as real guns.

It is not hard to have a replica gun sent to your door, as is noted in this article:

Getting a gun replica sent directly to your door therefore isn't difficult — but you will be breaking the law and the risk probably isn't worth it. The maximum penalty for importing imitation firearms without import approval is currently $275,000 and/or imprisonment for 10 years.
Here is the definition of an imitation firearm, from the nsw.gov.au
What is an imitation firearm?
An imitation firearm is defined in section 4D of the Act as an object that,  regardless of its colour, weight or composition or the presence or absence of any moveable parts, substantially duplicates in appearance a firearm but that is not a firearm. An imitation firearm does not include anything that is produced and identified as a children's toy.
Carve a wooden pistol that looks real, and you have committed a felony that you can be used to put you in jail for years.  An Australian man, Sicen Sun, found out that the danger is real.  Maybe it was the 3D printers. From 9news.com.au:
A 27-year-old Sydney man on Tuesday became the first person in NSW to be charged with possessing blueprints to manufacture firearms after detectives raided his Bronte apartment.

Sicen Sun was granted bail on Wednesday after Waverley Local Court heard he was "something of a fanboy" who allegedly made the guns to resemble those in TV shows and games like NCIS and Call of Duty.

But Detective Inspector Joe Doueihi, of State Crime Command's Firearms Squad, said imitation firearms were treated just the same as the real thing under the law.

"He just took it that extra step," Det Doueihi told reporters in Parramatta.

"That's no defence in the current law, he's committed a serious criminal offence and that's why he's before the court."

The detective said Sun faces maximum sentences of 20 years for manufacturing a firearm and 14 for possessing the blueprints.
But Mr. Sun did not just possess 3D printed imitations. He also had *air pistols*!
From yahoo.com:
Police located and seized four imitation pistols, including a 3D-manufactured small Glock, a 3D-manufactured Glock, a 3D-manufactured Sig 250; two air pistols, computer equipment, and two 3D printers. Pictures: NSW Police
If you are going to Australia, do not take any airsoft guns, do not take any replica guns. Do not take a slingshot.

Possession of a replica, non-functional gun has the same sentence as possession of a fully functional real gun.

Millions of law-abiding GUN OWNERS likely voted for Hillary.

This article tells where gun ownership would stand in the US, likely withing one year after her taking power - via EXECUTIVE ORDER.

Sure, Congress would TRY to resist, but the courts, then solid-Democrat would simply PUNT THE ISSUE, as they tried to do with Executive Amnesty, when the liberals on the Supreme Court said the issue was between Congress and the Executive Branch.

In other words, if Congress didn’t like Hillary ordering the immediate seizing of all guns, all they had to do was pass a law stating that her EO was illegal. And to do that, they would, of course, need a VETO-PROOF margin (2/3 of the vote, meaning many, many Democrats). So, the bottom line would be that Hillary would RULE BY FIAT, and the Republicans would be powerless to stop her.

But I know, Trump is so crude, losing the Second Amendment would be a small price to pay to keep Trump out of power - right NEVERTRUMPERS?

“But I know, Trump is so crude...”

I hear you. As one anti-Trump family member sniffed... “he’s a vulgarian!”.

As opposed, I guess, to that Saint-in-a-potholder Hillary.

Is the magazine Guns & Ammo illegal there too.

Pathetic. Strip the guns off the details of those protecting the politicians. They should be afforded the same level of security as the peons.

I went to Oz last year, will never go back I’m afraid to say, its such a nice place but laws like this screwed it up permanently.

And the criminals who have working guns - why do the politicians deliberately leave guns in their hands?

It seems they have pretty serious enforcement of the gun laws in Australia.

The politicians likely can not remove them all.

Maybe you are referring to specific cases?

If so, please elaborate.

Of course, many politicians are corrupt.

Interesting that despite these draconian gun laws Australia still has gun crimes and terrorists also have no problem obtaining guns. It is only law abiding Aussie citizens who are disarmed.

FYI, “airsoft gun” and air pistol are two entirely different things. If you get shot in the head with an airsoft gun you go “OW”, if you get shot in the head with an air pistol you probably have 5-10 grains of lead at the very least under your skin and possibly in your skull.

I understand the difference.

Can you tell, from the picture, if the “air pistols” are air-soft or more conventional air pistols that use .177 or larger pellets or BBs?

No, because it’s to hard to zoom decently. In hand or a few feet away probably in a heartbeat. It’s just a peeve of mine, you mention airgun/air rifle. To anyone and they assume airsoft. Not commenting at you there, just generalizing. Ironically, airsoft gear like holsters, web gear and magazine pouches are pretty damn good for real bangsticks too!
