I find that interesting.
It is true.
Having been raised in and lived in the South all my life, you see many more mixed race couples in the south than you’ll ever see in the north. There have been mixed race couples in the south since before the country was founded.
Also you see black and white kids and teens playing together and hanging out together. I bet you don’t see a lot of that in the north, at all.
My father-in-law, who is as redneck as they come has black hunting buddies.......................
That’s a very insightful point from Maya.
GET OUT is an attempt by liberals to re-establish black victimhood. If blacks don’t see themselves as victims, they won’t stay on the Democrat plantation.
GET OUT tells blacks that we are not in a ‘post-racial’ post Obama world, but are, in fact, still in a heavily (cartoonishly) racist society out to get them and turn them into slaves.
If you flipped the racial paranoia with blacks as the bad guys, there’d be riots at the theaters trying to show it.
This is a continuation of the effort to make whits ‘the other’ in America and keep blacks distrustful of the progress they’ve made.
There’s also a movie - forever going higher - bar of what’s “racist.”
The white family who accept their unmarried white daughter dating a black man and sleeping with him in their roof while visiting are laughed at by the protagonist as racist because of ‘micro aggressions.’
The film did surprisingly well, mostly playing to the African-American audiences. It garnered 99% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The only negative review was from a black writer.
Some of the most racist people I have ever met are northerners...............

This has been stated more succintly, and I first hear this decades ago, as:
In the South, they don’t care how close you get, so long as you don’t get to high.
In the North, they don’t care how high you get, as long as you don’t get to close.

I’ve heard a different variation upon that for many years, and it’s likely the basis for Maya Angelou’s remark. That would be this: Blacks in the south can get as close as they want, but don’t get too big. Blacks in the north can get as big as they want, but don’t get too close.
Having spent a lot of time in the south growing up I can agree with her on that part.
