Meals on Wheels received 50 times the typical amount of daily donations on Thursday after the White House proposed cuts to some of the programs sources of funding, a spokesperson for the group said.
Volunteer sign-ups also jumped, increasing by 500%, according to Jenny Bertolette, a spokeswoman for Meals on Wheels America.
Bertolette said the support to the national Meals on Wheels office has been amazing and very overwhelming.
She said local programs raise funds individually, but she theorized that there was likely a groundswell of local support, as well.
The outpouring of support comes shortly after the White Houses budget blueprint suggested eliminating the $3 billion Community Development Block Grant program and cutting funding for the Department of Health and Human Services....

Exactly.
Gravity is always flawless. The swamp keeps on draining.
Good on those who care about this program.
But this is exactly how things should work.
That is the way it is supposed to be!!!
Is my dream of small govt impossible?
Its the public stupid!
Now get gubmint OUT of all others. Let the volunteers and the charities take the case. The charities’ gubmint tax subsidies are another matter altogether.
But this sign up is even better. One of my friends delivers meals. He's 82.
This is as it should be.
We donate a few hundred dollars per year to our local meals on wheels program which also provides medical transportation and other services. It’s how it should be financed in my opinion.
Biggest winners — local communities and churches.f
I bet local $ are spent at least 75% towards charitable goals while government $ are spent at 35% or lower.
Of the up to 25% kept by local coordinators, it’s local money still. Money spent on Government contracts means some small time political hack and his circle are enriched to further their agenda ... their further enrichment.
They’ve been running radio commercials all day today as soon as cuts were reported!! Never have I heard commercials for meals on wheels before on the radio!! They are putting all the stops on President Trump...little by little they are going to illegitimatize this President ..come hell or high water!!
Mission Accomplished!
That is how it is supposed to work. There is nothing in the Constitution that provides meals to anyone.
I know Meals on Wheels is a good charity because I used to have an older, home-bound neighbor it helped supply regular meals for. Occasionally, my wife and I would have extras from a meal and would take a plate over to him. He was by himself and appreciated the attention and care.
But if these organizations can raise their operating capital from private donors and attract volunteers, why do they need the taxpayer's money?
Answer: Because it's easy to give away other people's money when you're a big government liberal.
Communist governments always outlaw private charity because it illustrates that some beneficial things do not necessarily come from the government.
Subsidiarity is an organizing principle/ Catholic teaching that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest or least centralized competent authority. Political decisions should be taken at a local level if possible, rather than by a central authority.
Government control = corruption. When you have to rely on a third party to do something or receive something you have to pay off the government agents involved, one way or another.
Hmmmm. So a charity doesn’t need massive federal funds???
In Viet Nam, as in the developing world generally, when you deal with a government clerk or officer for anything, it requires a small or larger bribe. It is corrupt and an annoyance for a westerner but it is a miniscule outlay compared to the official fees required to for things in freedom loving America. In VN if a man wants to build a house and has the bit of land to build it on he buys the materials and he and his family build the house. A member of the local constabulary might come around to see what one of his charges is doing and might need a 100k dong (less than $5) consideration and he goes away. It will take, perhaps another 2-3k dong to get the electricity turned on. Of course, you are responsible for the quality of what you build. If it collapses with the first typhoon, well, you should have built it stronger. You can use your land just about any way you see fit.
Sure, when govt. gets out of the way, citizens step in to take up the slack.
