This is a question which comes up often. Usually it is just which “one” gun would you choose.

I can’t argue with Miculek’s picks but I would change the .357 to a Glock 20. Still a .357 magnum would be about as good as any.

Erle Stanley Gardner, author of the Perry Mason novels once wrote an article on survival and his one gun would have been a Smith & Wesson model 17 with a six inch barrel. Not a bad choice either.

Specifically mine would be a Remington 870 with 18” barrel and extended mag. A Ruger 10-22 and the Glock.

I know the 1911 inside and out, it can stop a lunatic dead in his tracks and .45 ammo would/should be plentiful.

Is it just the large caliber bullet for stopping power?

A .357 handgun makes a lot of sense if you also have a .357 lever action rifle because you can use the same ammo for both. (I have one of each). But I think the best combo from scratch would be:

AR-15 or AR-10
Shotgun
Glock 19

There is a lot to be said, however, for a .22 rifle in a "survival" situation as you can use it for hunting small game as well as for a weapon. You can store and carry a LOT of 22 LR ammo in a pretty small space and it's light. I'm not a Glock fanboy and don't even own one but I have friends who do and that Glock 19 is probably the most reliable semi-auto I've ever seen.

Hmmm...
I own that very 8 shot 357 revolver with 2.5 inch barrel. I only load .38 specials in it as my backup gun at work.

Anyone interested in that revolver...they actually make speedloaders for it.

PTR 91 (HK 91 clone, .308)— Battle Rifle
Remington 870 Express 12 Gauge— CQB
.17 HMR bolt gun (Savage)— Light, accurate for small game hunting to 100 yds; can carry thousands of rounds with little weight penalty

I’ve always found pistols utterly useless other than concealed carry; better with hands / sword close up anyway.

In a worst case scenario of complete societal breakdown there won’t be any case ammo after a while. It will be a black powder world.

Exactly, a .45 in the chest from close range will drop most men.

Pistols and revolvers can be amazingly accurate. It just takes getting used to them. Also helps to be a good shot.

That's a really good point. Having a 50 cal inline with 209 priming system wouldn't be a bad choice. I've seen long range shooting shows that bag game at 300-500 yards with such equipment.

I'm invested in 54 and 58 cal, so I'll need a bullet mold and some lead stock, and some nipple caps...
