CBS This Morning on Tuesday did the bidding of the ACLU and expressed concern over an Alabama mega church lobbying to have its own police force. Showing a clueless attitude in the wake of the 2015 Charleston church shooting, reporter David Begnaud asked Greg Garrison of AL.com: Why can't they just rely on 911 and call for help if they need it?

I’m reasonably certain that there are at least five people carrying concealed at the Mass I go to.
I have never taken that statement to be a joke. I have always taken the statement as one of self defense is your own responsibility.
The same reason Bloomberg (and all the rich “gun safety” hypocrites) have a private militia for personal protection ... he isn’t going to wait minutes (or several donuts) when seconds count!
It’s a true statement.
See the post above yours, it explains it. It’s about keeping out of the church out of the jurisdiction of real cops.
Because the church is aware of issues like this in the U.S.

Back in the 1780s and ‘90s, my ancestors in what is now West Virginia, carried their guns to church and placed them in the back in case of an Indian attack (according to written documents from that time period). How is this any different?
The right to self defense, we all need to be on the lookout for someone that wants to do us harm and be able to defend our family. Nobody else can do it, self preservation.
Like poor Robert Godwin, eh?
Why not ‘just call 911’? Did ya really just ask that?

Where were ya then 911 peeps? People aint psychic and can’t call you folks 20-30 minutes BEFORE something happens to give you enough time to arrive and get set up and wait for the impending chaos-
Universities can have their own police force. Hospitals can have their own police force. Why can’t churches have their own police force?
Disney has their own city basically. Police, Fire, Code Enforcement etc. Reedy Creek is what they call it I believe.
It’s not a joke, it’s a statement of fact. It’s not meant to be funny.
“Its not a joke, its a statement of fact. Its not meant to be funny.”
I’m well aware of that (See my Post #17) but it’s meant to be a humorous insult to the police.

In MA, most Campus Cops are sworn officers in local PDs. They carry firearms and they have arrest and retain powers. This is in addition to all of the waivers people sign to get to live on a private campus.
The folks I’ve talked to that are campus cops had worked in the military or a local PD and retired to campus cops. Not a bad gig.
Pardon?
There are very few private campuses. And the campus "police" exercise their "police authority" over everybody who is on the campus. Not just those that live there.
But let's get back to the real issue. Why can't they just call 911?
You mentioned campus police.
And if you do not think that a private college campus is private, I invite you to walk around some evening trying to get into dorms. Its not as easy at it looks.
That said, if they wish to hire people who have been trained and accepted by a local police fore; and deputized (or whatever has to happen to make them more than rent-a-cops) and they wish to pay for it—who are we to complain.
Their police powers would not go beyond their stated locations.
Why wouldn’t they just call 911? The answer to that is obvious. How can you not understand response times and deterrents?
I live in a north eastern suburb. The cops usually get on the scene withing 5 minutes—which is great response time. Except that in the case of a shooting, its about five minutes too late.
If you live in a township or rural community response times are longer. Thus, the need for a “local” response team.
Its the same reason why high school football games have ambulances on the scene.
Having said this, awhile back, somewhere in the middle of Iraq war, a few of my fellow members started to carry. I live in Texas, so having an AR15 in the truck in the parking lot was common even before this. I started to carry a few years back when I found out that Allah Ackbar translates as please shoot me now! We have a couple of law enforcement types and a few firearm enthusiast that I suspect carry. Out of maybe 100, I suspect 10-20 are carrying.
There have been many crimes in recent years in churches that don't involve the pastor running off with the piano player or a Sunday school teacher touching a child in the wrong place. If you have such a large campus that you need more than a few deacons carrying, I can see the use of a security force in charge of several campuses. If you stop and think about it, we risk what you are talking about everywhere. Cities can cover for hijinks in the mayor's office and college campuses can cover for the Regents. Selective enforcement is possible anywhere, not just a church. What would make a crime in church somehow more devastating than a cop covering for the chief stealing from the evidence room or a jailer using a broom handle to sodomize a prisoner?( which has happened) The guys that I know for a fact carry in church can shoot, but I don't know everyone that carries. Having a trained force sounds a little more secure to me. The only caveat now is I will continue to carry no matter what. Perhaps a few years ago, I would have left it in the parking lot. I've learned the difference from 1960, when you left your doors open and the keys in the car, to today, where 8 different organizations want to cut your head off and dance on your burning body. I may die anyway, but I would rather die with a gun in my pants than hiding under a table while an idiot picks us off one by one.
The telling thing about what you said was you trust churches less than you do a city or a college. Personally, I don't trust any of them but most churches aren't pits of crime and if there is wrongdoing, it's usually some guy sucking women's toes or some other repressed fornication. If a church cop decides to cover up for a pastor stealing money or whatever else, surely he would shoot back when a Muslim comes in to spray the church. That's the bottom line in this story.
I don’t see any reason they can’t just hire security guards. They don’t need full police powers to protect lives and property.
It is not easy to get into an office at a police station either and yet they are not "private".
Public money, Public place. Private money, Private place.
So simple even a college grad can understand it.
who are we to complain.
Just the public.
When some place decides to set up it's own police force that will have first of all the interest of the institution in mind rather than the law and the Constitution there is a potential for trouble.
How can you not understand response times and deterrents?
So the campus police can get there faster?
Maybe.
Doubtful but possible.
But if public campuses would quit violating the students Constitutional rights there would be far more deterrence.
Its the same reason why high school football games have ambulances on the scene.
At a football game you expect injuries. At a college campus you should expect crime?
Interesting.
