Trump’s Evangelical Team Defends Kushner Against Russian ‘Nonsense’

Sarah Pulliam Bailey at the Washington Post reports this morning that a handful of conservative evangelical leaders have issued coordinated statements supporting Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner as he faces allegations of improper contacts with Russian government officials.

Those defending Kushner include some of Trump’s earliest and strongest supporters on the Religious Right, including Southern Baptist pastor Robert Jeffress, Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. and prosperity gospel preacher Paula White. Also included in the group is Samuel Rodriquez of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, who has criticized Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric while simultaneously giving Trump political cover:

The group praising Kushner included Southern Baptist pastors David Jeremiah, Robert Jeffress, Ronnie Floyd and Jack Graham, Maryland pastor Harry Jackson, Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr., former Liberty chaplain Johnnie Moore, Florida megachurch pastor Paula White, Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, and George Wood, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God.

Newsmax has collected the statements. In his statement, Falwell accuses the media and Obama administration holdovers of “collusion” against Trump:

I believe the only criminal collusion occurring over the last year has been collusion between the media and government officials who are holdovers from the Obama administration leaking classified and secret information in an attempt to discredit our president. Through their actions, they are aiding and abetting those abroad who wanted to divide our country in 2016.

The endless attempts by the media to keep the fake Russia collusion story alive solely to obstruct the president’s agenda have destroyed the media’s credibility with the people and needs to stop. In Jared Kushner, they’ve picked the wrong fight. I don’t know a more competent person. He is brilliant and is a man of the highest integrity.

Pastor David Jeremiah marvels that it’s “just like God” to use a Jewish couple like Kushner and Ivanka Trump to protect American Christians:

I can’t help but admire Jared and Ivanka. The two of them have put their lives entirely on hold in order to pursue the good of their nation, and I have found them to be particularly interested in our concerns as evangelical Christians. It’s just like God to use a young Jewish couple to help Christians in the United States defend their rights, and secure their religious freedom for now, and for subsequent generations.

Ronnie Floyd says that he considers Kushner a friend even though they have never met because he is helping Trump fulfill his promises to conservative Christians:

From the beginning of my own interaction with President Trump, there has been one person always there at every meeting, available to answer every question, and immediately following up upon concerns of our community. That person is Jared Kushner. Though, I don’t know him personally, I think I reflect the sentiment of many evangelicals across the country when I say that we view Jared as a close friend, who is deeply concerned that our issues remain at the forefront, and that the president’s promises are fulfilled as it relates to our community. I admire him and appreciate his service to our country.

A number of the statements mention positive personal interactions with Kushner and shrug off allegations about the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russians. White dismisses “this Russia story” as “nonsense.”

This is from the "enemy camp" but I wanted to post it because it shows an important movement of conservative Christians backing the president.

Are the Jewish ‘pastors’ giving any cover for Jared Kushner? Why aren’t any more Evangelicals speaking out from their pulpits? We have a President who won’t chastise you if you speak about the shape the country is in and we need to add prayer for the President and our country.

Kushner and Ivanka are the roots of liberalism in the Trump administration. They party with George Soros and his son, they are not fit to be in a conservative administration.

I love how the media uses the word “evangelicals” but doesn’t realize there are also charismatics, orthodox, conservative Catholics, hard shell Lutherans, etc...

Maybe this is a place I can add comments on Herman Cain here in Atlanta. He has a radio show mornings from 9 to 11 Eastern time.. and it is mostly political. He takes calls and answers questions. He is a conservative voice in democratic Atlanta... a conservative black American voice. He is easy to listen to... kind and knowledgeable.

Thank you, Herman, for speaking out and passing on what you know and what you believe! You are a super nice person who I appreciate.. and I’m sure many more do also.

I’ve been to a Bilderberg, am I a liberal? I volunteered for President Ford, am I a RINO?

Yeah, I'm kind of baffled about the theological basis for Christian pastors to publicly support a liberal Jewish couple ... especially when one spouse had renounced her Christian upbringing and converted to Judaism.

WTF?

True... however Trump trusts them. That’s more than I can say about some of the Republicans. Trump was once a more moderate Democrat.. and he is pretty much conservative now. Everyone can see the error of their beliefs ... once in awhile.

A true church does not separate Jewish couple from anyone else. Jesus Christ is the important ingredient.

A true church does not confuse its message, either — by placing politics above its Christian mission.

placing politics above its Christian mission.
Socialism is cynicism about society:
SOME writers [e.g., modern “liberals”] have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher.

Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one . . . Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built upon the ruins of the bowers of paradise. For were the impulses of conscience clear, uniform and irresistibly obeyed, man would need no other lawgiver; but that not being the case, he finds it necessary to surrender up a part of his property to furnish means for the protection of the rest; and this he is induced to do by the same prudence which in every other case advises him, out of two evils to choose the least. Wherefore, security being the true design and end of government, it unanswerably follows that whatever form thereof appears most likely to ensure it to us, with the least expense and greatest benefit, is preferable to all others. - Thomas Paine, Common Sense (1776)

Socialists use “society” (or “public”) as a euphemism for government; since as Paine points out, government is an evil and society is a blessing, that represents cynicism toward society. And “cynicism" is and antonym for “faith.” Thus, “without faith it is impossible to please God” translates directly to "with cynicism it is impossible to please God.”

IMHO "Let not then your good be evil spoken of” pretty much excludes allowing socialists to slander Christianity with unopposed cynicism. But if you oppose socialists on religious grounds you will be accused of “politicizing religion.”
