Vanity--Cord Cutter Part II

Posted on 07/31/2017 5:43:14 PM PDT by AbolishCSEU

Officially cancelled my DirecTV today--I have been working with a Roku which my hubby has taken to like a duck to water.

I did purchase an antenna with rotor--now because my lovely Samsung TV doesn't have an optical in/out, I can't do a passthrough to my Yamaha receiver for my surround sound--THEREFORE, I went out and purchased a TIVO. So far not impressed. Already they want an annual "maintenance" fee and say (after taking my money) that I have to wait up to 24 hours for activation.

I haven't set up my antenna yet in it's permanent location so reception isn't the best. It is destined for my 2 story garage--we live in a low spot and hubby hasn't had time to help me install it since he's started his own HVAC/contractor biz.

Any feedback on the TIVO?

Haven’t had a television since March of1995.
You might give that a go.

I purchased an active HD antenna on Amazon.

Looking forward to it, but hubs likes to wind down in front of the TV. I have a 40 hour job plus a few part times gigs. Hubs works 7 days a week literally. I’m approaching 60 and he’s approaching 50.

Tivo is not for penny pinchers. That being said, nothing else comes close.

Get the biggest antenna you can find and mount it as high as possible for the best reception. I wasted a lot of money trying different smaller antennas when I really just needed a jumbo one in my attic, which I would have put on the roof if that hadn’t done the trick. You can’t beat physics.

This is the one I got:

I bought a Tablo High def over the air video recorder. The antenna plugs in the back of it and then it connects via wifi to the Roku or Fire via and app over your home network. It was a little confusing getting it up properly on my wifi but we have had it up for several weeks and are delighted with it. You can watch live or recorded. The only fee is $49/year if you want the advance guide but you don't need it and it works fine without it.

I was trying to figure how you would use the rotor. It looks like you are likely switching between Syracuse and Rochester. On the antenna, I was thinking more of a brand and style of antenna (e.g. Winegard, Channel Master, how many elements etc.) if you are in a low area and are springing for the rotor anyway, you don't want to cheap out on the antenna. There's nothing wrong wioth getting an active amplification antenna, but it cannot amplify what isn't there, so size and # of elements counts.

Unfortunately, an avoidable side effect of digital broadcasting is the inability of picking up fringe signals. That's why you don't see 100+ mile range antennas anymore like you used to for analog VHF.

I have a Samsung TV and also I have a Sonos system and use the audio pass through option via HDMI cable. Does your Yamaha have HDMI inputs?

FYI 99% of modern TVs do not process surround sound to external speakers. Most associates at electronic stores do not know this fact.

So, if plug your surround sound speakers system directly into the back of your TV, you just get a stereo signal masked as surround sound. Either plug you speakers into your cable box/Roku via digital audio or use pass through option via the HDMI cables.

If you have high speed internet you can watch ANYTHING for free, networks, netflix, movies (all of them)..whatever. I watched a netflix movie last night.. “Get Me Roger Stone” and the 3 part “Five Came Back”

You can also get free telephone service... I use google voice mostly and have like 5 different numbers..one in El Paso so old friends can call me at a local number.

My advice is get the best internet connection you can and cancel phone and video services to save $

Our internet fee is more than offset by savings on phone, long distance and free TV.

Stream baby stream.

Check for an audio pass through option on the Samsung if you wish to bypass the TIVO.
