On the night of 9/11 I couldn’t sleep. Sat out back in my backyard hammock looking due east, the Atlantic Ocean is about ten miles due east of me. Most of that night almost non stop I saw red lights, way up, flying up and down the coast going real fast.

I went out back on 9/11 to look up and not see any planes (that would have been unusual for us) and lo and behold there were planes flying way up there and back and forth. Was a cool site knowing they were there to protect us. I’m on west coast.

No planes on 9/11 that I could see, save for one tiny light far off (I was out at dinner that evening), SF Bay Area has SFO, OAK and SJO, all planes grounded, maybe that little one I saw was a stray GA plane hurrying back in.

I didn't see the planes going up and down the coast, though.

Plane (jet) I saw and heard the other day may have been the Blue Angels, they are in town for a show. But it was a lone plane.

Oh. Here we go, one of the a-holes who thinks the length of time on a web site means something. *Yawn* Go play in the traffic ok?

Out here on the East Coast, in the NJ/NYC area it was a different story. You had to be here. I’m telling you there was something flying up and down the coast for most of that night. And a week after that is when all that outbound military traffic began. My dad and two of my brothers, one of whom was working in the city that day lost quite a few friends on that horrible day. In fact my one younger brother was working for a big construction management company in Jersey City that day(Jersey City is just across the Hudson River, west of NYC) and was at the building department a little after 9 in the morning when somebody ran into the building and yelled “The Trade Centers* on fire!’’

He stepped outside and looked east just as the second plane hit. He saw it all go down. Back in the late 70s and 80s I worked in NYC, I used to commute on what is called the PATH trains (Port Authority Trans Hudson) into The South Tower everyday. Yes sir, nothing like The Big Apple. * Everybody out here in the NJ/NYC always used to refer to the place as ‘’The Trade Center’’ . It was never called “The World Trade Center’’ or “The Twin Towers’’, it was simply “The Trade Center’’. Miss those buildings....

Thank you, that's very kind of you. My youngest brother is a sous chef in NYC and was teaching a class of mentally challenged young adults the basics of banquet preparation that summer in a partnership with the World Trade Center/Port Authority and the New York State Department of Education. Upon their graduation a number of his students got jobs in The Sky Box Cafe in The South Tower. The woman who was head of the education program was also the manager of the cafe and wanted my brother to come work for her in The South Tower as the cafe’s manager but my brother had a good paying, high end job in s swanky restaurant uptown. 11 of his students and the woman who was the manager were killed that day. To this day my brother tells me sometimes, at night in his dreams he sees them. “They're calling to me ‘’ he says. “And I can't help them’’.
My dad was a retired construction executive who had a
friend, a retired architect who was meeting with his broker that morning in Windows On The World in The North Tower to talk about setting up a scholarship program for disadvantaged inner city kids. When the plane hit he knew he was done for. he called his wife to say good bye and he went out the window. And to round out this sorrow of personal 9/11 horror my oldest brothers birthday is Sept. 11.

Please don't feel bad about it. It was his birthday well before it was a day of horror for all of us. There are other people here who have birthdays (and anniversaries) on that date. Try to remember the good that day represents to you and keep it separate from the bad.

Oh I do believe me. Time and place always move forward. It’s in the nature of we humans to not dwell on the bad of life. I just think, for myself we may have forgotten a little too much of what happened that day and who was responsible for it.

Nope, it’s about ATC, no aircraft lineup on a runway based on their destination. Wind direction and speed determines the active runway. Same same all over the world.
