Why Washington should finally make Puerto Rico a state
Politico ^ | October 18, 2017 | Cesar Conda and Alberto Martinez

Weeks after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, the island remains in crisis. Eighty three percent of people in Puerto Rico don’t have power and thirty five percent don’t have access to clean water. The death toll currently stands at 48 but is likely to keep rising in the coming weeks.

Washington has responded to this crisis with billions in immediate disaster assistance, helping the cash-strapped island afford its basic expenses after tax revenue has all but dried up. This financial commitment isn’t going to end anytime soon: Experts suggest the final cost could exceed $100 billion.

Furthermore, the people of PR have show consistently that they don’t want to be a state. ................... But, they like it here in Amerika, everything for free in America......

My grandfather was born in Puerto Rico and no one questioned his U.S. citizen credentials when he joined the Army, put on our nation’s uniform and fought the Nazis.

And today, without statehood, more and more Puerto Ricans are going to move to the mainland.

Two more permanent rabidly left wing parasite senators to suck the lifeblood out of the country. Not only do we not need PR as a state I’d love to see Hawaii become part of Japan. They wanted it 75 years ago and as a punishment they should get it now. Let them pay the welfare freight that the islanders live on.

Gerald Ford 1976 advocated just that. Why I don’t know. It festered for 40 years while the bombing range issue and others played into the hands of the left. Now the hurricane is being used to whack us over the head. I say let Trump deal with it. We will not be disappointed.

I wouldn't cut them loose.. How about we hire Chip Gaines and do a Fixer-Upper on Puerto Rico and then re-sell it to the highest bidder. It is a tough market out there.. but HGTV can puff up any property to make it more attractive. You know that China is always looking to expand

I seem to recall reading that there was something strange about that referendum, like something happened to affect the numbers or something. But I may be making that up.

Give PR to the Cubans & let them build socialism together. PR’s I knew in the Army were all gushy about Cuba anyway, the food, the music, even the Ricky Ricardo way they speak Spanish.

They deserve each other.

NO!

Do not cut them loose where they would fall in league with Cuba and Venezuela.

Make Puerto Rico a county of Florida and launch a reverse migration of honorably discharged vets by granting them free parcels and manufactured home loans.

Stop the corrosion of American greatness. Start going on the attack!

So Democrats can have another 4 million voters??

No thanks. We don’t need even more welfare recipients.

The only really logical reason to make PR a state is that in so doing it would make Illinois and California look fiscally well managed.

Results of the last 3 Puerto Rico statehood referendums:

1998: Statehood 46%, Independence 2.6%, Free association (?) .3%, Territorial commonwealth 0%, None of the above 50.5%
2012: Should PR continue its current territorial status? Yes 46%, No 54%
Which non-territorial status? Statehood 51.16%, Free association (?) 33.34%, Independence 5.49
2017 Political status: Statehood 97%, Independence 1.5%, Current territorial status 1.32%

The turnout was just 23% in the latest referendum. The pro-status quo group boycotted the election. Before any decision is made I think several things need to happen. First, PR must present to the Congress a code of laws and state constitution in English. Second, there needs to be a another referendum approving or rejecting the new code of laws and constitution. Third, a plan needs to be in place for excusing, restructuring or paying off the debt. Otherwise the US should unilaterally declare Puerto Rico independent, cancel the passports of everyone living there and open an embassy.

If PR were admitted as a state they would have 6 or 7 electoral votes (the population is shrinking by about 50,000 people a year.) If they vote the way their mainland cousins do those electoral votes will go to the dems.

Basically, anything Politico is for, we should be against and the reverse.

It would make the Flag look funny.

We can trade PR for CA.

The Senate stays the same, there will be less Rat Congress Critters and the number of “automatic” Rat Electoral College Votes will be greatly reduced.
