Blood glucose meters are like razors. They sell you the razor inexpensively then bleed (sorry, pun intended) you dry when buying blades.

More important is to beware of the cost of the measuring strips.

I've found the Walmart “ReliOn” meter to be just fine, and the replacement strips are quite affordable.

On line price at the moment 100 strips $17.88
Accucheck brand is $69.95 for a 100 count.

The ReliOn “prime” meter is $9.00

Good luck.

I usually buy my test strips on E-Bay, you can always find some good deal. Also don’t be afraid to buy test strips that are out of date. Research shows that out of date strips can be good for almost 5 years after expiration.

Get on a Low Carb/No Carb diet and you can reduce the amount of drugs you have to take, maybe even eliminate them.

Second that.

We had a cat with diabetes and the ReliOn meter & strips were a great savings for us.

We lost him after 10,000+ insulin doses.

Peace to you and great health.

The ACCUCHEK uses gold connections in the blood strips. Mucho expensive

The Relion uses silver for its blood strip connections, much cheaper, gets the same results.

i second this recommendation. local ambulance drivers tell me that they use this one because the strips are cheap and Walmarts are all over the place. Like digital thermometers, the basic chip in all of these monitors is probably the same one anyway, and the only difference is the bells and whistles, and how much they gouge you for strips.

None of them are truly “accurate” in an absolute sense, but as long as they produce relatively repeatable results, you can get a pretty good idea of your trend, which is the most important thing in glucose monitoring.

YEAH, I’VE READ THAT!

Thanks for the tips. Strip costs are one of the factors I’m looking at. I suppose different meters take different strips, right?

I went with the ReliOn "Confirm" monitor due to your recommendations + those I found on the Intartubes.

The relatively inexpensive strips were a major factor, plus the unit's ability to track measurements over a long period of time.

I wish it were easier to offload the data to a MAC, but you can't have everything. < |:(~
