Rare Event NC: North Carolina Open Carrier has Gun Stolen
Gun Watch ^ | 6 January, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

On the afternoon of 22 December, 2017, in the WalMart on Skibo Road, an open carrier had his firearm stolen from him. The precise circumstances remain unknown. No shots were fired. The thief  is reported to have ran away with the firearm. From fayobserver.com:
About 3 p.m., Fayetteville police spokeswoman Asia Cannon said, inaccurate information based on radio scanner traffic began circulating about a shooting at the Walmart. Officers arrived and discovered that a man had grabbed a gun off another man who was open-carrying the weapon. The man who grabbed the gun then ran off.

Guns are stolen from concealed carriers about as often as from open carriers. So far, we have not seen cases where an open carrier was shot to steal their gun, or shot after the gun was stolen. Concealed carriers had guns stolen in Ohio in 2015, in Louisiana in 2014.

Both open and concealed carry have advantages. Open carry has tactical deterrence. Most criminals will avoid armed people. Concealed carry has tactical surprise. If criminals do not know you are carrying, you have a better chance to surprise them if you are attacked.

In countries where guns are hard to get, police are sometimes shot and killed, simply for their guns. It happens in Venenzuela on a regular basis.

In the U.S.A., guns are stolen from the police as well. In October, a police officer in uniform was attacked in Cleveland and his openly carried gun stolen. In December, a police officer who was not in uniform, in New York City, was attacked and his concealed gun stolen.

Millions of open and concealed carriers carry guns every day. The number of guns stolen from them, while they are being carried, seem to be less than one per year, according to press accounts.

There are about 17 million people with carry permits in the United States, and millions more do not require a permit to carry, openly or concealed.

Assume 17 million carry at some time during the year. Assume one per year has a gun stolen from them while they are carrying. The odds of having a gun stolen from you while carrying it would be 17 million to one for one year.

About  17,250 people were murdered in the United States in 2016. That is 49 murders per million people per year.

From the reported data, people are 800 times more likely to be murdered than have their gun stolen from them while they are carrying it.

(That’s 80,000% more likely to get murdered than have your gun stolen,...for those in Rio Linda.)

That is gun stolen while you are carrying it.

That is from published events. Hard to get data on these events.

This is so weird... Two nights ago, I had a dream that I was illegally (concealed) carrying in a shopping mall. Some thugs were shooting up the place and I got a round off with success. However, I was detained and scorned by Mall Security. I’m still not sure of the point of the dream (or my post here) but I’m guessing it has something to do with the political climate of illiberalism versus justice.

I assume that having your gun stolen while carrying is an extremely rare event. How many times does it happen in the US in any given year?

I have the choice to open carry or cc, after personally witnessing a trained law enforcement officer have his gun pulled out of his holster by a psychotic patient, I choose to always cc. I don’t have the training or specialized equipment of a cop, so why take a Chance.

Open carry is BLING (Look at me, I have a gun, I’m so cool!). You may have a constitutional right to do it, but you also have a constitutional right to be stupid. I carry every day, but nobody knows that except ME.

“Both open and concealed carry have advantages. Open carry has tactical deterrence. Most criminals will avoid armed people. Concealed carry has tactical surprise. If criminals do not know you are carrying, you have a better chance to surprise them if you are attacked. “

In this environment of feral thug attacks in groups, one can easily be overwhelmed even by a small group if you are open carry...

Why make yourself a target ?

From the article;
“Guns are stolen from concealed carriers about as often as from open carriers. So far, we have not seen cases where an open carrier was shot to steal their gun, or shot after the gun was stolen.”
It is a well known fact that most guns are lost while boating!>)

Very hard to know. No one keeps statistics on it. I have seen less than 1 incident per year for the last decade, at least.

Just a small handful of incidents.

What is not logical about criminals avoiding people they know are armed?

That’s not what I’m disputing. I don’t think there are as many guns stolen from concealed carry as open carry!!

The numbers are tiny. These are extremely rare events.

Here is a source that covers all the event I recall, and a couple of more.

Some of the incidents are difficult to characterize clearly as open carry or concealed carry. Not all the incidents result in theft.

Characterizing cases where the gun was actually taken from the private citizen who was carrying it, I come up with four open carriers, and 5 concealed carriers.

I did not count where the gun was taken, fought over and recovered (concealed); or the police woman (concealed), or where the guy was showing his new, unloaded gun to a buddy (possible open).

These cases are complicated, and not always clear-cut.
