Most gun owners probably own a .22 rifle and/or pistol. And you usually buy the ammo for that in small bricks of 500 or 550 rounds. When I first bought one of my little rifles, Federal had a box of 550 rounds of .22lr at Academy, for $16 or $18 each. Nowadays it's closer to $25 or $30 per 500 rounds, but you still generally buy them two or three thousand at a time. I would really guess the average gun owner has more than 1,000 rounds stored.
