Most of the songs in these lists are either the tip of the iceberg of great super groups or silly ditties from one hit (or 2 or 3)wonders.

I agree with your description of the songs. However, Top 40 still ruled the AM band well into the 70's and maybe beyond. Not everyone had an FM radio--these were a lot more expensive at the time than AM-only radios, and most car radios could only get the AM band.
