Battle of the two powerhouse handguns
Both the Glock 10mm and the .357 magnum are serious personal defense calibers. YouTuber mark3smle demonstrates what each caliber is capable of against a ballistic gel.

Ballistic gelatin is a testing medium scientifically correlated to swine muscle tissue (which in turn is comparable to human muscle tissue), in which the effects of bullet wounds can be simulated.
In other word, the ballistic gel gives you an idea of the path of the bullet when it penetrates a target.
You can observe the length of the penetration and the thickness of the canal. Normally, the beginning entrance is usually where its thick. This thickness is the density of where muscle tissues are being damaged.

These two powerful cartridges penetration are quite impressive. Traditionally, the .357 magnum has a long track record of a mini-hand cannon for personal defense.

The 10mm is a newcomer in the hunting world, but has become a big player in the market for bear hunters or anyone needing extra power. The 10mm penetration was around 16 inches.

Without talking about the numbers, both calibers are very impressive for power. If you’re an auto frame person, go with a Glock10mm. If you’re into Dirty Harry mini hand cannon, go with a .357.

Both are dandy calibers but crappy for firing within a house - they over penetrate walls - and are very hard to control for a fast second shot.

Can't go wrong with a .45: it's worked flawlessly for over a century and it puts 'em down.

I climbed Half Dome 10 years ago and almost purchased a 10mm in case I ran into bear and needed some extra stopping power. I also considered the availability of 10mm ammo after talking it over on FR. Instead I brought my Ruger .357 and never saw a bear during the hike. In my head I debated the 10 rounds (Calif) and the 6 round capacity, and also brought 2 fully loaded speed loaders. I’m glad I never needed the gun and burned more calories carrying the extra weight.

In my house, I keep my .357 loaded with glaser rounds in case of an intruder. I may get a 12 gauge for home defense one of these days.

I was on a range next to a guy shooting a Glock 20. Damn, that hurt ME.

I have a 686 that used to belong to the Colorado State Patrol. Very nice.

I carry .357 snubby with .38+P defense ammo. But I keep a .45 and short barreled shotty in the bedroom for home defense.

10MM just gives a lot more rounds, I think.

I have a 2.5in old model 66 (recessed cylinder) and generally only use the 38+ps. The full load old 357s rounds I have are quick to clear out your ear drums if fired in doors without ear protection and if they don’t killem, they burn them to death from the flame.

LOL. I do keep one .357 in the cylinder. It will be my last shot, if ever necessary. Agree on the attention demanding fire and boom from with .357 rounds. It draws looks at the range. It is a good concealed carry weapon. But with .357, it ain't fun to shoot.

.357 is a smaller diameter bullet. Comparing energy at delivery, a full power 10mm round delivers more power. But since both will blow through most targets, it is a moot point anyway. (All that wasted energy existing the target, what a shame.)

When I shoot my .357 at the range it draws looks too. People back up and watch, then ask what caliber cannon I’m shooting. I’m more accurate with my .357 with magnum loads than I am with my H&K 9mm. I think the .357 fits me better. I would love a .357 semi-auto (not the Sig).

Both are less effective on humans than lesser powered, slower velocity cartridges. Then again shooting a ballet running so fast it can penetrate several people might be more effective if firing into a crowd of Zombies.

BTW, I was not aware Glock manufactured 10mm ammo. Will it function in a Sig Sauer P220 pistol or Colt 1911 chambered for 10?

If you shoot at a paper target at 10' with the right ammo, you can see powder burns on the target. I've never tried any closer for fear of setting the range on fire. LOL

And does anyone know where someone can find the new Ruger PC9 that came out in December? The wholesalers I’ve checked with several times are out, out, OUT OF STOCK!

The Glaser's ought to help - but if you have small kids, revolvers are difficult to safeguard from the curious. (I know that we are supposed to keep them locked and away - but kids are really ingenious).

I am of the point of view that the .45 is the best fighting instrument known to mankind and a fast-opening pistol safe with a cypher lock is the best chance to keep the kids away from the home defense beast.
