A record 245 people tried to jump off San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge in 2017, but fewer succeeded, thanks to the citys men and women in blue.
The number of successful police interventions with potential bridge-jumpers jumped from 184 in 2016 to 245 in 2017, while the number of confirmed suicides fell from 39 to 33 over the same period, according to a bridge authority report cited by The Marin Independent Journal.
Five new police officers were added to the bridges security detail in 2017, bringing the number of officers available to thwart suicide attempts to 36.
In May of last year, construction began on a $211 million project to build a suicide deterrent system. According to an April 13, 2017 press release on the bridges website:
In May, contractors will begin installing temporary fencing along the Bridge approaches and around the tower legs. They will create detailed measurements so they can begin manufacturing the stainless steel net. In mid-2018, they will begin installation of the suicide deterrent. Similar deterrent systems have been used in various locations around the world, but never in this scale. The deterrent at the Golden Gate Bridge will span 1.7 miles of roadway on each side. It will be located 20 feet down from the sidewalk and extend 20 feet out, over the water. The suicide barrier will be built over four years, with an expected completion date in 2021.

Can I ask a stupid question?
What does it being Trump’s first year have to do with suicides and attempted suicides? Are they hinting that Trump has something to do with people wanting to kill themselves? It seems like an odd headline to me.
The vast majority of jumpers leave eh bridge facing the Bay.
The ones who err and end up on the Pacific side must the biggest losers.
While I don’t believe in darwinism, this phenomenon seems highly darwinian.
They need to build in a plank specifically for suicides.
I'm sure Trump had nothing to do with it...
They just want to tie Trump to it, just like all the recent news about the Homeless.
—for some reason , the bridge between Arizona and Nevada at Hoover Dam doesn’t attract jumpers—must be something about the Bay area——
—that’s what I cynically thought when I lived there—along with a flashing sign and a counter that said—”You an be #——!”—
Those that leave the most offspring, long term , determine the genetic make-up of the species at that time. You don’t believe that?
Lack of commitment that the laws of physics (or any other law) does not apply to them.
So, now there are 36 cops whose sole duty is to stop suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge?
How much does that cost, Governor Jerry?
Bush’s fault!
Let them jump, who cares!
The bridge jumper waiting lines were around the corner?
If San Fransicko is a sanctuary city for illegals shouldnt it be a sanctuary city for suiciders? This is a Pro-Choice issue no? Arent LIEberals for pro assisted suicides? This is discrimination. LOL
The people must like it that way because they keep voting for it?.

It’s San Fruitcisco and 3/4 of them voted for Clinton. That’s a lot of mentally ill people.
