When you first go to the free e-file page, it says that the free fillable forms option is only for income 66K and above. But when you get into the FAQ for the fillable forms, it says that ANY income level can use it. AAARRGGHH
Check it again. It has two boxes. One for below and another for above $66K. Both are free.
I have used TaxAct for years, excellent service, really like their program that audits your filings and alerts you to potential snags.
I’ve used Free Tax USA every year since 2005, just filed again with them this year.
>>>Does the new tax law have any effect on filing for 2017 taxes, e.g. itemizing vs not?<<<
Only if you have a Time Machine.
BTW, who won he 2018 Superbowl? Do you have next weeks winning LOTTO Numbers?
Since I will owe money again this year, I’ll be doing my Taxes in early April.
I don’t want to get too depressed by doing them now.
Call it intentional ignorance, just like being a Democrat.
Free fillable forms is indeed the correct answer.
They just opened up today for 2017 filings:

It’s simple, it works; put in your numbers and you’re ready to file.
If you are dealing with charitable contributions you are itemizing. I wouldn’t trust a free app with that. You are better doing paper forms and mailing them.
Looking for a simple way to file
H & R Block

An excel spreadsheet set up with all the forms. Fill in the blanks, print it out, send it in.
Have no idea. You could lie about your age :)
I got my H&R Block from Newegg. Reasonable prices.
My taxes are pretty simple so I chose the Federal + State option.
Be aware, H&R charges 19.95 to file your state return. You can print it and mail it just for the cost of postage (I'd suggest return receipt requested :).
I discovered Turbotax after a complex year during which I moved cross-country, sold a house and bought another, etc. it worked wonderfully and I am using it again to efile.
