“Tio Amo”, Two Words that Lasted a Lifetime for my Grandparents

Mr. and Mrs. Menotti celebrated Valentine’s Day 70 times

Pietro Menotti stood on a ship’s deck among throngs of weary, penniless immigrants like himself. Staring into the haze of a hot summer day, he saw the first of two women who would determine the course of his life.

She was the mighty lady with a torch whose message to foreign lands had attracted millions: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Exactly.

Even I know it's "te amo" and I'm a gringo.

It should be “Ti Amo”. “I Love You” in Italian.

Brought tears to my eyes. Aging is a cruel thing, but the certainty that we will be with our loved ones again makes it all worthwhile.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the French who added that to the base of the Statue of Liberty. And meanwhile, immigrants who came to America back then, didn’t live off the other hard working people of this country. They picked themselves up by their bootstraps and made what they could of themselves. That isn’t the ambition of the illegals flooding (and who HAVE ALREADY FLOODED) into out country these days.
