I will give the Obamas this, they’ve captured essentially how I’ve viewed them from day one.

Not true! The “artist” does paint caucasian ladies, as long as they are a severed head being held by a “lady of color”, with a knife in the other hand.
her artwork is amazing... and I’m not saying that from the viewpoint of an art-critic.

It’s a good picture except Michelle looks rather unhappy.
Michelle I guess suffers from depression (despite Obamacare), but the artist should have painted her as if in a happy mood for an official portrait.

This is sort of like that “Emperor’s new clothes” tale. People are raving over her portrait ... compared to the other things this artist has done, this really sucks. There already are much better portraits of her, they should have chosen those.
The Spanish cleaning lady who "fixed" the Jesus fresco should have been commissioned instead.

Did you see the portrait? SO totally hideous. I read that at the unveiling today at the Natl Portrait Gallery the audience gasped and/or laughed. It’s THAT bad, and Michelle heartily approved. No one ever thought she had taste, anyway. But she’s really good with that racist stuff.
In a few years Michelle Obama needs to have a second portrait done - then a few years after that replace the first one...
She’s a terrible painter.
I think Amy Sherald rendition of Michelle Obama was hostile. Our former First Lady is represented looking more like her daughter than herself - and the ‘whites and grays’ show her condemned for being ‘establishment’. Toward the bottom of the painting are the power stripes... more than in other works of this artist, but it's too campy.
It's an interesting work but disappointing. It won't survive the test of time. Michelle Obama deserves better.
