Tomorrow morning, approximately 30,000 runners are expected to participate in the 8th annual Jerusalem Winner Marathon, which will take place in the nation’s capital, according to the event’s website. The event will include several tracks – marathon (42.2 km), half-marathon (21.1 km), 10 km race, 5 km race, family 1.7km race and an 800 m community race. This is one of Israel’s largest marathons, with 30,000 participants of which hundreds are elite runners and runners from abroad. The various tracks pass by fascinating historical sites that illuminate 3,000 years of the history of Jerusalem, Israel’s capital.

In addition to the challenging and exhilarating hilly terrain of Jerusalem, many of the runners can expect to see exquisite landscapes, breath fresh mountain air and run past the unique shops and Jerusalem culture and heritage sites such as the Israeli Knesset, Machane Yehuda Marketplace, Mount Scopus, the Old City, David’s Tower and Haas Promenade.

Many of the runners in tomorrow’s marathon have raised money and garnered sponsors for charitable purposes. One example of a wonderful Israeli organization that has garnered sponsors for their runners is the OneFamily Organization – an organization that aids the families of the victims of terrorist attacks. Team OneFamily, the team of runners that represent the organization, is a family of athletes supporting Israel’s victims of terror. The message of OneFamily, taken from their website is this: As lives are torn apart across Israel – and men, women, and children are bereaved and injured – OneFamily promises to provide endless love as well as emotional, financial, and legal support.

The fact that there are many sponsorship opportunities for tomorrow’s race is no accident. On the official website of the run, there is a “Running for a Cause” link which provides easy access for anyone interested in learning about how to sponsor a runner or a running team. The Jerusalem Winner Marathon website also features the Team OneFamily runners on their “Running for a Cause” page.

The mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, had the following remarks regarding the upcoming event: “Every year, I am newly invigorated to see the thousands of runners, young and old, who come from all over the country and around the world to participate in the Jerusalem Winner Marathon. Each year, participants run through the very streets where kings and prophets walked, against the backdrop of Jerusalem’s cultural and historical landscapes. It is a unique and breathtaking experience.

In just a few years, enrollment has increased from 10,000 to 30,000 runners, with 3,000 international participants from 62 different countries. The Jerusalem Winner Marathon is the most socially engaged marathon in Israel, with over 6,000 runners participating to promote social causes.”

We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful capital city, such as Jerusalem – a capital with a rich and beautiful history, beautiful people and wonderful events for everyone.
