I think the threat is more like Brave New World. We haven’t had even 65% eligible voter turnout since 1908, while the poorest are now the most likely to be obese. The internet and social media are like soma or bread and circuses that pacify and preoccupy society.

I don't disagree with that. 1984 is about a government beating citizens into submission with fear and terror. While not as dark and violent, Brave New World is actually MORE sinister, being about a manipulative government who's genetically bred the desire for freedom out of people and gives them feel-good medication to keep them dumb and happy. Between the two, that's the more likely direction we're headed in.
