I got on a kiteboarding excursion somewhere on the planet, and when I fly out of Detroit, transfer flights in Newark, Dubai or some other mid east country, arrive in Thailand, Vietnam, or say the Philippines, and on returning transfer in Korea or China, and then to LAX or Chicago, back to Detroit, I never see the edge...Think of it as like the complex plane. It's flat, but the singularity at infinity is like the poles. You didn't fly over the poles.

I worked at a machine shop that had one of the world’s longest lathes for a while - the machinist rode in a cab along the length of the machine. They discovered that even though they had been meticulous about leveling it, it was off - turned out that the curvature of the Earth was the culprit and instead of using special levels they had to use lasers to straighten it instead of leveling it...this was in the late ‘60s.
