Kanye is finally allowing us to have a real conversation about Race, and not the lecture the Left loves to give everybody about Race.
It was a choice for blacks to enslave other blacks and sell them to Arabs who sold them to Europeans.
It was in Alex Haley’s Roots that black tribes sold other black tribes to the Spanish. Yet they act like they don’t know.
Historically, the choice was between enslaving people captured in war or killing them.
He was refuting the "400 years of slavery" claim we hear bandied about so often by various race hustlers and victim-enablers. Since European colonization did not begin in earnest until the 1600s, those who claim "400 years of slavery" are basically saying that blacks in this country are still enslaved.
Mr. West's comment was along the lines of: "400 years? That sounds like a choice" - meaning that anyone in this country who is still a "slave" is allowing themselves to be enslaved.
Bob Marley said basically the same thing in the song "Redemption Song":
"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery,
None but ourselves can free our minds"
Tommy Sotomayor is really cool.
I should make it clear that the above analysis of Kanye Wests is my opinion, based on the context of his comment. I do not pretend to speak for the man himself.
I remember that. The series also portrayed Africa as some sort of paradise before Kunta Kinte was captured and loaded on a slave ship. The slave ships were horrible, make no mistake. Many died in transit. But Africa itself was no picnic, then or now.
Tommy nailed it and hammered it home with many historical nails.
Your interpretation makes sense to me. Probably right.
the truth will out
Good clarification.
It was paradise before Evil White Privileged Oppressors arrived there.
Peace, prosperity, fertile land, brilliant scientists.
I could be completely and totally wrong.
