The head of the United States Marine Corps says the Marines' air power could be completely uncrewed within 15 years.
General Robert B. Neller, commandant of the Marine Corps, says the technology exists to realize this future. Neller stressed, however, that aircraft would not be completely autonomous, and would still be directed by a human being making key decisions.
The Marine Corps Times quoted Neller from an event at the Brookings Institution saying: I dont know what war is going to look like in the future, [but] I think things that fly in the sky, the great majority of them there will not be human beings at the control. There will be a human somewhere directing that thing.
The Times further quoted Neller saying, We can fly everything we get now without a human being in the cockpit, Neller said. Any vehicle we have, any airplane we have
to fly that thing I am not sure we need a human being.(continued)

Like the same way they said fighters didn’t need cannons and left them off the F4 phantom? And then had to scramble to put them on when Vietnam came up? That military brain trust?
I imagine most people would guess there would be an increase in the use of drones.
It still seems to me that really expensive aircraft should have the pilot inside the plane.
Overhype as usual. Should read my decision paper for the Air Force 4 stars.
“Marine Corps Commandant: In 15 Years, Our Aircraft Won’t Need a Human in the Cockpit”
This jagoff has been watching too many sci fi movies and video games. Replace him.
“Like the same way they said fighters didnt need cannons and left them off the F4 phantom? And then had to scramble to put them on when Vietnam came up? That military brain trust?”
Yeah, the same geniuses. No guns on original F-4’s, or F 102’s/106’s either as I recall.
“In reality the Marines only need things like some Harriers, Warthogs, and some fighters”
Hell, all they need are Corsairs and Hellcats for ground work.?
I recall that under Obama the Iranians were able to hack one of our most sophisticated drones and capture it. Humans cant be hacked.
You can build aircraft at a more rapid rate than you can recruit and train pilots, then “grow” them into combat effective aviators.
Removing the human from the cockpit also removes a number of engineering constraints from the design criteria, and also removes one of the chief limitations to aircraft performance.
And every time you send a manned aircraft into harm’s way, mission planning necessarily has to consider a multitude of factors that collectively seek to minimize the odds of it ending with a military funeral. UCAVs? Not so much.
Good luck flying an unmanned P-3 or P-8.
Paper Mache' doesn't count. Iran is about one level above a Cargo Cult.
