I was always interested in WWII because a favorite uncle was injured on Iwo Jima. Other history became more interesting as I got older.

Don't forget, until well after the Romans appeared, the Germans were nomadic tribes that didn't even have a written language, and spent most of their time wallowing in pig $hit and engaging in petty feuds.
It was only when Christian missionaries came, that the Germans developed its sophisticated ways. It was only after the Germans were Christianized that they developed the Guttenberg press, that Martin Luther became the first modern media star, and that the German states actually became a powerful force for Christianity all over Europe, and later in America (remember John Wesley and Moravians?).
It was in the 18th and 19th Centuries that Germans began to abandon God and begin pursuing the "perfection of man". German society had many philosophers who successfully separated man from his Creator, and this lack of connect bred a sanctimonious and self-righteousness that led to many Germans believing they are the "Master Race" (and some of that arrogance is present even today among modern Germans).
It was this sense of superiority and lack of humility to led to their attempts to take over Europe twice in the 20th Century. They had a form of God- Bismarck was a staunch Christian. However, the Wehrmacht's belt buckles- "Gott Mit Uns" (God with us) demonstrates that they put God below what was best for Germany. WE should be with God.
Today's Germans aren't the genocidal maniacs that tried to conquer the world 75 years ago (heck, most Germans I've met sound like they have French accents). However, they still have that same sense of superiority and look down on others, although it comes in new forms.
In conclusion, I've never met a dumb German. However, I've yet to meet on that has humbled themselves enough to turn to Jesus. If any of you know some German Christians, please let me know.
Tell that to the millions of people Hitler was responsible for killing not counting the destruction he caused; add in what Germany did during WW1 and you have a huge pile of bird poop.
