Tariffs are a fee that foreign companies are forced to pay for the privilege of doing business here. Domestic companies pay taxes to support our infrastructure and government, whereas foreign companies, in the absence of tariffs, have access to our markets while not paying their share to support the infrastructure that makes that market possible. Taxing imports forces foreign companies to pay their fair share in exchange for being able to sell their goods here.

Additionally, manufacturers in many developing countries do not have the deal with overhead like environmental regulations (i.e. Chinese industries and those of many other developing countries just dump their raw waste into the rivers or into the ground). Our manufacturers incur costs that foreign manufacturers do not, so once again charging a tariff simply levels the competitive playing field.
