AR-10 vs AR-15
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 6/13/2018 | J Hines

We can all agree that AR’s are not only reliable but are great at short ranges from 0 to 300 yards.
But what if you want to reach out further to 400 yard or 1000 yards? For the larger cartridge would the AR be able to deliver the same punch as its cousin the .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor?

Before making the decision to go with an AR10 or AR15, lets take a look at the comparisons.
AR-10
The AR10 rifle is an air-cooled lightweight rifle that is gas operated and comes with the 7.62mm (.308) barrel.
uses the standardized 7.62x51mm loads and has a standard 20-round detachable magazine box.
It weighs between 3.29kgs and 4.05kgs, without the magazine and ammo. The super-lightweight feature was as a result of the use of aluminum alloy.
The metal parts were save for the steel bolt, barrel and bolt carrier group.

AR-15
This rifle employs the same "direct gas impingement" as the one used on AR10s.
Which results in 800 rounds per minute from this gun, with a muzzle velocity of 3200 FPS or 975 m/s being realized to a maximum effective range of about 600 yards.

Interchangeable Parts
For those using both AR’s, here are some parts that are commonly interchangeable between the two:

Buttstock Assembly The buffer tubes of AR-15 and AR-10 are usually the same in diameter. Having a quality buttstock allows comfort and can improve your shooting.
Trigger Group
Even with though the lowers on both AR’s are different sizes, the triggers are still interchangeable.
The mechanism on both are the same.

Who's the Winner?
This is a question that is nearly impossible and hard to answer.
The reason is that these are both quality rifles that gives the users many advantages when using the AR platform.
So determining which one is the clear winner would definitely have to factor in how good the user is. Read the rest of this AR-10 vs AR-15 story here.

No need to choose.
No need to decide.

Why not have both ?!?!?

If I could only have one of the two I would go with the AR-10. I think 30 caliber rifles are just a lot more fun to shoot. But, the ammo is more expensive and heavier.

I trained on an M14 and carried an M16 (in VietNam) and my son has an AR15 today. I chose an AR10 for myself.

Both great guns; I have a passion for .308 Winchester.

I have done exactly that.

The Armalite AR-10b is a wonderful weapon and the quality really shows.

As for the AR-15 I have a couple dozen that I have built in a variety of configurations and calibers.

This is like the noisy debate whether the .270 or the 30-06 is a better round. Owners of either one are very happy, so it doesn’t matter.

If the fecal matter hits the air mover, mobility is an issue. If you have to lug 1000 rounds in a box and run a mile, which caliber would you like to lug?

Not again! Idiotic comparisons that even conclude, at least this one, that there is no right or final answer. The hunting discussion is odd since a .223 or 5.56 is too small in many states for big game hunting.

I don't have an AR-10 (yet). I've got a .308 Winchester bolt action for out to 1,000 yards (but haven't done that yet either).

Exactly! I have both, each from JP Enterprises where they are the JP-15 and LRP-07. And I really like each of them.

I'm waiting on my suppressor for the .308. And waiting. And waiting . . .

Ar15 in 6.5 Grendel. Best of both worlds.

Even more important, in your scenario which caliber would be easier to find lying around once the 1,000 rounds you're lugging are expended or lost? For me it is 5.56 all day every day for SHTF.

Thee argument is not even close. The .270 is a lazer beam for distance, great on all Deer and Antelope. The 30-06 can handle heavier bullets, great on all Deer and Elk.

Me? I’d be lugging the .22LR. The kid would be lugging the .223 and .308. 😜

IIRC snipers often carried an AR on their back while holding their 7mm bolt gun.

The older I get, the less I can physically tote. Sure, a vehicle will haul all the .308 I can cram into it, but if/when I have to leave said vehicle, that ammunition gets heavy. Around 15 years ago I went all-in on the 5.56, 9mm Parabellum and 12 gauge as the chamberings/ammo to have as I pick up speed going downhill.

Uncle C spent a good chunk of 1944/1945 as an officer helping to haul munitions for Patton's 3rd Army, and he witnessed what happens when the fighting outstrips the logistics. Some of what he said got through my "filters."

“Ar15 in 6.5 Grendel. Best of both worlds.”

I happen to agree - the ballistics are really compelling. The only problem is ammo availability - you can go into pretty much any sporting goods store and find both .223/5.56 mm or .308/7.62 mm, but you can’t yet do that with 6.5 Grendel. It is getting better, seemingly every month or two, but it still isn’t even close. If I was to get a Grendel-configured AR, I’d definitely only get it with a couple thousand rounds, plus a reloading set up with components for at least many hundreds more, plus at least a dozen magazines...because if the S does HTF someday, you don’t want your rifle to just be a very expensive club.

I'm old enough that, if I can't drive there, I won't be showing up. Why either/or? Why not both? A lot depends on circumstances. Yes, 5.56 is lighter. But 7.62 has better penetration when dealing with bad guys inside a vehicle.
