STATEMENT:
The cocked striker indicator pin sticking out the back of an XD is also an outstanding feature. If that pin is not sticking out, it can't be loaded. And you can feel it in the dark as well as see it, even in your holster. Pin is flush, chamber is empty, period.
REPLY:
That is the hammer indicator, the chamber indicator is on the top. The hammer indicator will be out if the hammer is cocked even if there is no round in the chamber.
This is why I carry a revolver.

This is why I carry a revolver. KYJim's Rules of Carry:
1. Any gun is better than no gun.
2. A gun that is reliable is better than a gun that is not.
3. A hole in the right place is better than a hole in the wrong place.
4. A bigger hole is a better hole.
Maybe 1a could be: A gun you know is better than a gun you don't know.
Jeff Cooper's Four Rules:
1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
(I was corrected once when I accidentally left this off) Amen
