It is ridiculous to ask the best calibre for deer hunting without taking a lot into consideration...

Agreed. If you are shooting in forest or brush well under 100 yards, a slug gun is just about perfect. And for all around use .30-06 should be on the list.

It is ridiculous to ask the best calibre for deer hunting without taking a lot into consideration... Yep. In the thick woods of northern Michigan I still use my brush-busting 30-06. When I hunted out in Kansas and North Dakota I was using a 270.
