Welcome back, now if we could just hear from Wideawake - I miss him.

Me too!

Welcome back! Yeah, it’s been a pretty tough time for us all since Hillary became President. We’re putting a brave face on it but we’re all pretty much working for the Russians now. ;-)

I'm so sorry to hear of your health issues. May G-d send you a refu'ah shelemah!

I've been without a home computer for four weeks and one day (and a few hours). I don't know how I didn't lose my mind. This has been a horrible month. But it's so great to be back!

The old computer was a brand new Dell which I bought at Best Buy on 2/15 of last year. I have no idea in the world why it conked out, but nothing could fix it. They tried a new power source, a new motherboard, a new CPU . . . absolutely nothing would get it to turn back on. I sometimes think I'm a computer jinx, since I have more trouble with computers than practically anyone.

This computer is used, but it's supposed to be better. It's an old HP.

I’m soon going for a refurbished desktop now that they are well under $100.

I’ve been in a nursing home from an amputation, fill me in.

May you be granted a perfect healing!

My old Win7 machine bit it a couple months ago - fortunately, I back everything up on a combination of external hard drive and USB drives so once I got the replacement it was a matter of getting ‘reconnected’ and spending a number of hours over a few days putting all the files back on.

"My old computer (which was brand new at the beginning of last year) apparently couldn't be fixed."

Welcome back. You made the right choice of getting a used computer. Items like this have a "bathtub curve" failure rate. They have high early failures, then fall to a low failure rate for most of their lives, and then start a high failure rate again near the end of their lives. Mildly used ones can arrive after the early failures have ended.

I buy off lease Dells, and then replace them after a half dozen, or so years. They cost only about a hundred bucks each. The only hard disk crash I've ever had was just that, a physical crash. The headphone cable got caught on my chair as I rotated, and the computer crashed on the floor. Then the new replacement disk failed six months later. Other than that.....nothing else. You can buy a $1500 computer and use it for 6 years, and it will be obsolete for the last 5 years. Or you can buy a $100 computer and use it for 5 years, and it will also be obsolete for the last 5 years.

[No, the ambulance took us to nearby hospitals who had podiatrists on duty. Then they assigned us to two different nursing homes as well, because of insurance. We didn’t see each other for months and I missed my father-in-law’s funeral (he happened to pass away in my wife’s hospital) so it was a low point in my life.]

That’s a lot to go through. The silver cloud, I suppose, is that you made it through surgery and the initial period of recuperation. Any kind of surgery is dangerous, and to get through this kind of major surgery with complications - that’s a miracle in itself. Best of luck in your continued recuperation. I know someone who had a pacemaker installed. His whole life changed after that - just a lot of new hassles that made him seriously cranky on a day-to-day basis.
