Johnny Cash-The_Man_Comes Around

And I heard as it were the noise of thunder One of the four beasts saying come and see and I saw And behold a white horse

There's a man going around taking names And he decides who to free and who to blame Everybody won't be treated all the same There'll be a golden ladder reaching down When the Man comes around

The hairs on your arm will stand up At the terror in each sip and in each sup Will you partake of that last offered cup? Or disappear into the potter's ground When the Man comes around

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers One hundred million angels singing Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum Voices calling, voices crying Some are born and some are dying It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree The virgins are all trimming their wicks The whirlwind is in the thorn tree It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks

Till Armageddon no shalam, no shalom Then the father hen will call his chickens home The wise man will bow down before the throne And at His feet they'll cast their golden crowns When the Man comes around

Whoever is unjust let him be unjust still Whoever is righteous let him be righteous still Whoever is filthy let him be filthy still Listen to the words long written down When the Man comes around

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers One hundred million angels singing Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum Voices calling and voices crying Some are born and some are dying It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree The virgins are all trimming their wicks The whirlwind is in the thorn tree It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks

In measured hundred weight and penney pound When the Man comes around.

And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts And I looked and behold, a pale horse And his name that sat on him was Death And Hell followed with him.

If I recall correctly, he said this was the hardest song he ever wrote.

[Intro]
And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder. One of the four beasts saying, “Come and see.” And I saw, and behold a white horse

[Verse 1]
There’s a man going around taking names
And he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won’t be treated all the same
There’ll be a golden ladder reaching down
When the man comes around
The hairs on your arm will stand up
At the terror in each sip and in each sup
Will you partake of that last offered cup
Or disappear into the potter’s ground
When the man comes around

[Chorus]
Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling, voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
It’s alpha and omega’s kingdom come
And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn tree
It’s hard for thee to kick against the pricks

[Verse 2]
Till Armageddon no salam, no shalom
Then the father hen will call his chickens home
The wise man will bow down before the throne
And at his feet they’ll cast their golden crowns
When the man comes around
Whoever is unjust let him be unjust still
Whoever is righteous let him be righteous still
Whoever is filthy let him be filthy still
Listen to the words long written down
When the man comes around

[Chorus]
Hear the trumpets hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling, voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
It’s alpha and omega’s kingdom come
And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn tree
It’s hard for thee to kick against the pricks
In measured hundred weight and penny pound
When the man comes around

Such a great song. And so powerfully sung.

I always liked Johnny Cash but I think he put out some of his best music in his later years.

Okay, I like this song, but I'm a bit lost here.

You've got the hen, and you've got the chicken, and you've got...the "father hen"? Something's missing here.

MR. ROSS: They’re all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.

FRANK: That’s perverse.

If you like it, check out the movie “Dawn Of The Dead” ( 2004 remake ). It’s the theme song.

When Cash covered “Hurt”, Trent Reznor pretty much said that it’s now Johnny Cash’s song.

Superior to the original.

But, considering it’s Johnny Cash, not surprising.

Johnny Cash-gasmic!

It has been too long since I listened to that, T Y 4 posting.

It makes me think of another Cash Classic:

Then the father hen will call his chickens home

Good question. so often we don’t catch a detail. Might have the answer here:

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!

And it’s not as if the NiN version was bad at all, but that just showed the greatness of Cash.

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there’s a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he’s a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you’d think He’s talking straight to you and me.

Well, we’re doin’ mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin’ cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we’re reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought ‘a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin’ for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen’ that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen’ that we all were on their side.

Well, there’s things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin’ everywhere you go,
But ‘til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You’ll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I’d love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything’s OK,
But I’ll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
‘Till things are brighter, I’m the Man In Black.

Maybe a rural thing. If you have ever encountered a bantam hen with her brood you have a very vivid memory, one you are not likely to forget in the long future...……………...

I got the scriptural reference to hens, but hadn’t heard of a “father hen” or thought of a rooster doing double-duty as a hen. Maybe wearing an apron. Hmm, a “hen-pecked” rooster?
