To have an echo, there must be a surface that can reflect the sound, and an intervening space between the source of the sound and the wall or surface off which it bounces.
Flyover America lies between these to great combination reflection walls and noise generation points, the East Coast and the Left Coast. We hear those distant echos, but they come in such great profusion that almost no sense can be made of most of the noise, and therefore is ignored, many times, with no serious repercussions.
But once in a while, something almost understandable comes out of these competing sound sources, and it is enough to make the hackles stand straight up. Almost always, the alarm comes from realizing that once again, some long-held belief in the goodness of the wisdom of the Founding Fathers has been brought into question, and life is about to be upended for most Americans.
The response can be overwhelming for those of whom have come to expect compliance on earlier silliness, and now, the envelope just got pushed a little too far. What they get then, is not an echo, but a pretty darned sharp thunderclap.
