If you or someone you know is looking for work, there's an opportunity opening up in the Tri-States.
A local manufacturer is adding a couple dozen head of household jobs. These are skilled positions which the business said the industry is lacking right now.
For Chad Sommer, a manufacturing job gives him stability and room to grow professionally. In just three years he's worked his way up to a lead supervisor position.
"I just happened to stop by the office and ask if they were hiring. That's how it came about. They said yes they are. I filled out the application and two days later, I was hired," said Sommer.
Sommer works at Doyle Manufacturing. It's Palmyra facility has been open for just over a year. Now the company wants to hire more workers at their first job fair this Saturday.
"We don't go through temp agencies. We're hiring people who are looking for a career," said Doyle Manufacturing Human Resources Manager Catie Doyle.
Managers said it's not just Doyle that is looking for these jobs like welders and assemblers. They said the entire industry is in need right now.
"They're very well needed. Obviously we are putting things in place to simplify things and make production faster and keep the quality but they're very much needed," said Manager Colton Doyle.
And Sommer said in this type of job, you can't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
"You gotta be ready to do some physical labor. It's not so demanding where you go home beat tired every day but you feel like you've put in a good days work working here," said Sommer.
The job fair is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Palmyra. For welders they will be conducting weld tests. They will have equipment for you but you can bring your own mask.
If you can not attend tomorrow's job fair, Doyle said you can still apply in person at a later date.
I'm in Elgin IL today, and Help Wanted signs are everywhere around here. Aldi is paying $13.10/hr, and McDonald's is paying $10/hr to start.
$53,300 is a lot more than $13 an hour. Plus I assume Foxconn will have benefits. I worked for a staffing agency in a Foxconn plant here in Texas. The best money I ever made in my life in a salaried job.
I told an “economic development professional” a few years ago that the best thing Illinois had going for it was having so many people living near the Wisconsin border. He didn’t like it much, but it was true then and 20X truer today with Foxconn. Even JB Pritzker can’t stop people from commuting across the state line (just tax hell out of them).
Ahh,, there is the rub..
Tax the hell out of them.
If they don’t find the skilled workers they need, they should consider training qualified candidates at a training wage, with a stipulation that if hired full time after training they will remain for at least a certain time period. Or perhaps even open a school for welders, charging a fee which might be paid by their state’s employment service. Win-win.
So the question becomes, how many of those are individuals who do not WANT work? Second, third , fourth generation "takers" for whom work is a four letter word?
