A man wearing make-up on the street may elicit unwelcome glares, questions about his masculinity and even his sexuality. But in South Korea, ideas about how to look good as a man are changing attitudes and influencing the world, as the BBC's Saira Asher reports.
When the BBC posted a video about the make-up routine of a 16-year-old YouTuber in Seoul on Facebook, the reactions ranged from intrigued to downright vitriolic.
Some assumed this meant he was gay, while others admonished him for his choice saying "real men don't wear make-up". There were, of course, those that argued for his freedom to live life however he pleased and against the "fragile masculinities" on show.
But Kim Seung-hwan is used to it. He says he's been called gay by some Koreans online for as long as he's been doing make-up tutorials.
When asked about whether he thought he looked feminine after he put on make-up, he was confused by the question as if he had never even thought about it....

Just wait until this guy gets drafted into the Army, as all Korean men are.
He may have already served. It’s 21 months. We need to bring that back.
The Wall Street Journal recently had an article about Korean soldiers’ skin-care routines. I cut it out and sent it to my daughter at Parris Island.
Fad for young’ns not responsible for dealing with complex life management issues. When the SHTF young’ns won’t have the time or money to spend on such activities.
I work with lots of Koreans...they do well...and they have the means for self indulgence....causing medical harm to one of my younger colleagues. He too is preoccupied with “looking good”
It’s the increasing consumerization of our society globally.
Has anyone ever checked what the average millennial woman takes into the shower with her? It’s got to be 8-10 soaps and lotions and potions, with all kinds of brushes and scrubby applicators.
My Asian girlfriend says it is now an epedemic in most asian countries and it’s impossible to find a “real” man. They look and act like girls.
IMO it is due to pumping soy and plasticizers into damn near everything they eat/drink.
The USA is not too far behind. Comparing most American young men to those from Russia is like night/day. I think locking kids up indoors in fear of pedophiles also has something to do with it. In Russia they are still free to play outside and do real “boy” things
I hope they plan to leave the Korean women to us....

I volunteer to do the research.

Ha ha!
OH MY .....
Corporal Klinger was a coward who dressed in drag in hope of a discharge. It may well be that S. Koreas more feminized Klingers hope for a discharge from the social responsibilities shouldered by real men, including defense of one’s country.
A silent moment with hand over heart in res ppl ect for your sacrifice.
Many American men are fascinated with Korean girls, but South Korea has a nearly zero birth rate.
"...locking kids up indoors..."
In Thailand, they call them ‘ladyboys’. :P
“We need to bring that back.”
I don’t think it’s right to force someone to sign a contract but boy, do we need it. I would love to see the faces on them in boot camp. Oh, and women too.
Luker, our new “Laz’’.
