After decades of shooting, I’ve never had a failure in an automatic that I couldn’t fix in a few minutes. With the exception of my issued M9 which broke most times I shot it.

I’ve owned 4 revolvers and had many lockups with prolonged shooting sessions. Several that I had to solve by hiring a gunsmith.

If you can regularly clean your weapon, the revolver may be more reliable but if you plan on ever being in a situation we’re you must keep shooting a dirty weapon, the auto is more reliable in my experience.

Thank you for your post. Your experience is so foreign to mine that I would very much appreciate more details from your experience if you would please.

I use S&W and Dan Wesson revolvers, and in my mind compare them with colt 45’s. Thank you!

“I’ve owned 4 revolvers and had many lockups with prolonged shooting sessions.”

Can’t speak to trying to shoot 500 rounds in one session, nor can I imagine wanting to. But in 40 years of using revolvers, I’ve had 2 failures. One came with a Dan Wesson that I had carried thru a vicious dust storm I got caught in. It had enough sand inside it wouldn’t shoot until I squirted plenty of cleaner into its works. The second came when the strain screw came loose in my 686 and I got light primer strikes. Tightened it and have never had a problem since.

If I’m ever in a situation where I need to shoot defensively, I’d trust the Glock 27 I own and my Beretta Pico (and my Beretta 92, although I don’t carry it). I had a S&W Shield that I wouldn’t trust at all. But if I had to pull a gun and count on it in close contact, as a belly gun, I’d trust any S&W or Ruger revolver over any semi I’ve owned.
