Accusation Studies (Trial by Accusation)

Anyone can make an accusation. Me, too. I accuse American higher education of fostering an epidemic of unprovable and often unfounded accusations; accusations aimed not at seeking justice but at wounding real or imagined enemies; accusations that aim to shred reputations rather than uncover truth; accusations that give the accuser a sense of power unmoored from any sense of responsibility.

Accusation has become an art form in the academy. A really successful accusation unleashes a public furor that completely bypasses the question, “Is it true?” Instead it ignites instant outrage. It sweeps away everything in its path. It has its own logical whirlpools: If it weren’t true, why would she say it? Or: Even if there is no evidence, it is the sort of thing that might have happened. An effective accusation silences the doubts of those disposed to believe it. Then it attacks anyone who declines to endorse it. Those who doubt the validity of the accusation are part of the problem. They are allies of the accused and parties after the fact to the disgusting behavior of the accused.

From Campus to the World

Academics spend considerable time thinking up new accusations and trying them out on campus. ...

"I accuse higher education of displacing the pursuit of truth and the presumption of innocence. What counts on campus all too often is the grandeur of the accusation. "

"The Seriesness of the Charge" was identified some time ago.

Accusations by the left have devolved to agitprop.

Even witch trials of the Dark Ages made more reasonable accusations.

It’s the Fascist way. Fascism has become pervasive within our society. The tactic is to isolate, accuse, and shame your opponent into conforming to your mindset. The fall back tactic is always rebellion, which is now being organized.

If the left doesn't get their way, they will cause a dysfunctional state in the political environment. That is what we are witnessing. It will get worse.

Read up on the Salem witch trials. This Kavanaugh lynching follows the same MO. Damning accusations, a laughable "court," fabricated testimony (including "spectral evidence") from hysterics, and sentences of death.

And libs accuse conservatives of "witch hunts." This is so unbelievably hypocritical that only liberals could pull it off.

Higher “education” is basically lost. Other than some very specific technical degrees it is nothing but indoctrination. One of my children got through college intact. Another went for two years and dropped out because even he (at such a young age and with so little experience) realized he wasn’t getting anything from it. I fully support his decision to not return to college. He’s got a decent job and some good prospects. Overall he is far better off without it.

One of my colleagues taught for a while at one of the military colleges, where there was a strict prohibition against looking at porn on your computer. One day he was trying to Google “Punic Wars” and accidentally hit B instead of N (they are next to each other on the keyboard), and a porn site came up. He reported what had happened immediately or he would have been fired.
