The King Sejong Institute Foundation — part of the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism — operates 174 language centers in 57 countries.

IRVINE, Calif. — The South Korean government has chosen a Southern California language program to become part of its global initiative to advance the Korean language.

The King Sejong Institute Foundation — which is part of the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism — operates 174 language centers in 57 countries as a way to encourage non-native speakers to learn Korean. This year, it named 16 new sites, including the Korean American Center in Irvine, the only program selected in the U.S.

“It’s about sharing Korean language and culture with the greater community,” said Tammy Kim, co-founder and managing director of the Korean American Center. “For Korean Americans, it provides a way for them to connect with their heritage.”

When the Korean American Center began its language classes in January of 2016 — six levels of language instruction plus the mini-courses such as “Korean through K-Pop,” “Korean through K-Drama” and power vocabulary — the intent was to give Korean Americans a chance to learn their ancestral tongue, Kim said. At the time, there were few opportunities to learn Korean in Orange County, she said, even though the area is home to the nation’s second-largest Korean population after Los Angeles.

According to the 2016 Census estimates, approximately 95,000 Koreans lived in Orange County....

The Korean government also subsidizes Korean churches in the U.S. to have Korean language classes, both for Korean Americans and foreigners. I have studied Korean for 3 years, at two different churches.

Also am taking Mandarin at the local university from the Confucius Institute. Everyone is worked up that it is some sort of Red Chinese indoctrination program. Total B.S. Our teacher who is from Beijing and has university degrees in teaching Chinese, scrupulously avoids getting into anything political. It’s all the language and learning about traditional Chinese culture.

I actually get more “propaganda” in my Korean classes, mainly being offered S.Korean government publications on the need for reunification. But the teachers are very open, they say that they are not pushing it on you, it’s just if you are interested in the government’s position on issues.

Not a K-Pop fan, and I suspect you’re right, seems to me there are some very dark secrets in the K-Pop world.

K-Dramas= Wholesome alternative to American TV. No comparison between American TV and Korean TV in terms of quality, values, etc. American TV is just raunch, I haven’t watched for years.

Ditto. They should come with a “very addictive!” warning, though :-).

There are so many entertaining dramas and none of them will be raunchy. Here are some of my favorites:

Goblin
Descendants of the Sun
I’m not a Robot
Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (Chinese Drama)
Pinocchio
City Hunter
Faith
Arang and the Magistrate

When I was in the ROK a lot of servicemembers and their family made extra cash as "English tutors." It was a contentious issue on both sides. It took work away from professional English teachers (native Koreans or TPNs on work visas) in the ROK economy and of course, the cash payments to Americans were seldom if ever reported to the IRS.

There was a lieutenant in my BOQ who would sign a couple Korean teenagers onto post. His English curriculum consisted of watching Simpsons episodes with them.

Yep. Some other favorites:

Legend of the Blue Sea (aka “Mermaid”)
Oh My Venus
While You Were Sleeping (I’m in love with Suzy/Bae Soo-Ji)

and a very good one with a happy ending that just finished airing here last night: “Still Seventeen”

My favorite drama of all time is Chinese: “Wu-xin the Monster Killer” I think it’s on Viki now. Elvis Han is fantastic as the lead actor. Absolutely magical and wonderful, just superb, down to the music.
