When I married, my husband was very young and an only child of a doting mom. We were snacking late at night at his mom’s house, and she had already gone to bed. I asked what we should do with our dishes, and he said with zero guile, “Just leave them here on the counter. In the morning, they will be gone!”

Mothers are like that. My two grown sons have been on their own for a while now. But when either of them come to visit, my wife will still make their beds for them and even ask them if they have laundry that needs doing!

I gave up long ago trying to explain to her that they are no longer children!
