With all due respect, it must have been many, many years ago. There are no Brown bears in Pennsylvania!

Ursus americanus is the black bear’s scientific name; it means “American bear.” Although three species of bears inhabit North America, only the black bear is found in Pennsylvania. A population estimate in 2015 showed approximately 20,000 bears living in the commonwealth.

Some Black bears are brown or cinnamon in color. That’s probably what he meant.

Still, 400 lbs is pretty good sized for a Blackie. Very impressive to see in person, I am sure.
