Vanity: Why do people love the P.C. musical 'Hamilton'?
N/A ^ | 10/26/18 | BillyBoy

Posted on 10/26/2018 1:28:23 PM PDT by BillyBoy

I just had an argument with a Facebook friend who called me "closed minded" when I said I had zero interest in seeing the Broadway musical 'Hamilton'.

She says she won't talk to me until I check out the show for myself instead of "pre-judging it"

I told her that I know it getting universal acclaim, but after reading about concept, it sound really stupid...it appears the premise is "Let's intentionally cast ethnic minorities and women to play white men from the colonial era so 'modern audiences' can 'relate' to the story. I hate when they do that in movies so I doubt I would enjoy it any more if they do that politically correct stunt on Broadway (It's playing here at the Chicago Theater District and they cast "Miguel Cervantes" in the title role of "Alexander Hamilton", just like how the Broadway version has "Lin-Manuel Miranda" as Hamilton ::rolls eyes::)

I also explained that I'm not AGAINST an actor playing another ethnicity, if they can BELIEVABLY pull off that role. For example, I had no problem with Cuban actor Andy Garcia playing an Italian-American mafia figure in The Godfather III. I can buy him as Sonny Corleone's son. On the other hand, I CANNOT buy the very white and very British Benedict Cumberbatch as "Khan Noonien Singh", a Sikh from India. Ridiculous Stunt casting like that ruins the story for me and insults the audience's intelligence.

My friend replied that the musical is great because the music, lyrics, and story are incredibly powerful. My response to that is that is IF the musical is really good and compelling with catchy songs and a strong story IN ITS OWN RIGHT, then they could cast people that actually FIT the roles and it would still work. They wouldn't NEED some gimmick like Snoop Dogg plays Thomas Jefferson. Let's see "Hamilton" performed with actors who actually look and sound like the colonial era founding fathers, and see if still attractions the same "buzz" as the politically correct version does.

I’d like a brave director to do Roots with an all whit cast. I wonder if the enlightened liberals would be so welcoming.

And here is what Trump tweeted after what happened:

Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!

The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!

Tell her you’ll go see Hamilton as soon as they make a musical where MLK is played by a white woman.

I was invited here in L.A. MULTIPLE TIMES. I didnt care much about it nor do I need to be lectured by asshole leftard actors who hated on Pence and rightwingers like myself.

Of course I did not say that. Idiots who go watch it are EITHER white liberals who have liberal white guilt OR non-whites who hate whitey and this is their comfort zone.

In addition, your “friend” is a moron. I have had leftards “argue” with the words “fact” (they always say this) and they throw an argument that if you dont “try it”, you;re a bigot.

Nice try.

The reality is that no one would hate the show more than Hamilton himself.

Hamilton was brash, witty, supremely intelligent, with an appeal that cut across all boundaries in America.

He personified the American Revolution in a way that no other human being has ever done, save one. Donald J Trump

This used to be called social climbing

PoC were NPCs and either on the margins
or had no power in those days

Now through the fake but accurate power of
imagination and a .5 idiot populace
they can appropriate culture and
history that wasn’t and wil never be theirs with and make a buck
in the process

At least the dropouts will finally learn our
history partially

It's a valid casting choice.

And maybe someday we will see A Raisin in the Sun or Porgy and Bess with an all-White cast.

Remember things like Carmen Jones? A valid recasting of the French opera as a musical film with African-Americans. You can take or leave it.

Hamilton is no more "history" than 1776. It's entertainment.

The bigger point: name a memorable 21st century Broadway musical or memorable tune from a 21s century Broadway musical.

I can't think of any.

It's a fallow time for musical theater, and people who like that sort of thing will grab at whatever show attracts public notice.

If you don't care about musicals why care about this one?

But when we're JUST as adamantly against a white actor playing a character who is SUPPOSED to be a minority

I kind of liked Mickey Rooney as the Japanese neighbor in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Pat Morita just would not have been the same.

I HAVE noticed numerous "conservatives" like Mike Pence a.....nothing but fawning praise for this musical.

Fawning praise???? Where do you get your information bro, here's Pence's response to his appearance at the play.....

Washington (CNN)Vice President-elect Mike Pence said the boos he faced at the Broadway production of "Hamilton" were "what freedom sounds like." Pence also didn't criticize the show's cast for addressing him from the stage after the play's end Friday night, saying he wasn't offended and understood their message. "I did hear what was said from the stage. I can tell you I wasn't offended by what was said. I will leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it," he said on "Fox News Sunday."

Pence's comments come after Donald Trump's Saturday morning Twitter attacks on "Hamilton," accusing the cast of harassing Pence.

Hardly sounds like fawning praise to me...........Sheesh!

You can’t lose this argument. Simply do nothing.

She’ll never talk to you again.

Sounds like a win to me.

Anything that causes young people or old, learn about the founding fathers is fine.

You have to talk to people in the language they understand. In my parents time it was “the standards”. In my youth it was a mixture of Rogers and Hammerstein on one side and McCartney and Lennon on the other. Today it’s more rap and ethnic.

I’ve heard the show is good. What I’ve seen is not my “style”, but it evidently is popular. And good for the writers.

A funny thought just came to mind: what if the next episode of Black Panther had the Wakandans going into Europe and kidnapping whites to come work the fields.

That would be a hoot.

Cumberpatch was more believable as Khan than Ricardo Montoban. Really, look at Freddie Mercury. People from India can get pretty pale.
