The crux of the problem is that secular liberalism isn’t godly liberality. The two terms look similar, but who gets the glory is quite different between the two.
We should be careful not to extirpate godly liberality, which is a phenomenon that would coalesce around churches and other private charities having Christian influence. This is a bandwagon that I believe Donald Trump wouldn’t have a problem getting on. But mocking the poor on the assumption that they all did not make good efforts is cruel too.
